Chris Ware Heads To The Movie Lobby

Rob covered School of the Art Institute alum Apichatpong Weerasethakul‘s Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives when it was awarded the Palme d'Or for his new film at Cannes last year, and he reviewed it when it finally came to town as part of the Chicago International Film Festival. Now that the film is finally getting a wider release fellow Chicagoan Chris Ware has been drafted to create a movie poster for the film and it's just as intricate and stunningly detailed as you would expect it to be. This weekend we had the chance to check out a new film from Thailand that’s screening as part of the Chicago International Film Festival, Syndromes and a Century directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul. It’s been garnering an awful lot of attention (Mr. Weerasethakul’s film Tropical Malady won the Jury Prize at Cannes in 2004), and luckily we find ourselves in agreement that this is indeed a special film. more ›

As we reported yesterday, the 5th annual Chicago Outdoor Film Festival begins tonight with Howard Hawks' great screwball comedy and Chicagoist favorite His Girl Friday. As any of the 30,000 attendees of the legendary Radiohead show at Hutchinson Field in 2001 will tell, the beautiful Chicago skyline is an ideal backdrop to any summertime cultural event. But if you don't want to deal with the mosquitoes, the people, or trying to discern the tipping protocol for free bike valet parking (?), head down to Facets to see a movie the old-fashioned way: inside.
