Chicagoist checked our calendars and it's not April Fool's Day, so we're not sure why there are media reports that a contract extansion for White Sox skipper Ozzie Guillen is in the works. At least those are the rumors that WMVP AM 1000's baseball beat reporter Bruce Levine said recently. When asked, Guillen denied any talks of an extension with either Sox GM Kenny Williams or team owner Jerry Reinsdorf. Williams similarly denied contract talks,...
This week it seems almost impossible, but we're looking ahead to even more holidays for the shows that went on sale today. First of all, and also on the 1st, The Hold Steady just aren't playing New Year's Eve at the House of Blues, they're gonna stay around for the first day of the year and do it all over again. Boys and Girls in America made 2006 a lot of fun. We think this...
Remember how the Velvet Lounge was supposed to close on April 1st? Well, that didn’t happen (April Fool’s indeed!). Then remember how Fred Anderson said it was going to stay open for another month or so? That didn’t happen either, as it closed on April 8th. So now, the Velvet is moving. Like anybody else, they’re selling off some of the stuff they don’t need and asking its patrons to help them with a housewarming....
Tomorrow is April Fool’s Day. We’re a bit sad that it falls on a weekend this year as we’ll be unable to play childish pranks on the people in the Chicagoist offices. Guess the doodie-shaped-brownies-in-the-elevator trick will have to wait until 2008. Still, most pranksters give no quarter to the whims of the Gregorian calendar. So be on your guard tomorrow. In fact, you’d better start paying attention now because some people are already sowing...
The CTA has apparently gave up trying to be a viable agency altogether, begging off on making a decision and putting a significant choice in the capable hands of schoolchildren. The result proved once again that there's always something so funny in the world that you couldn't have written it if you tried: The newest CTA branch of the L will officially be called the Pink Line. Unofficially, it will be called crude names ......
Hey, indie filmmakers! On your way to getting pickled at Rainbo or hitting open mic night at The Innertown, stop in at Atomix (1957 W. Chicago) and sign you and some of your film major friends up for the Fast Forward Film Festival #17 – The Stranger. Forget the rumors you've heard, the show's a go. It seems that on April 1st, the guys running the event sent out an e-mail to their mailing...
It's Friday (read, "we're lazy, ready for the weekend and five cans deep into a sixer") so we're going to use the cliche lede that's surely spread over newspapers 'round the nation today: We wish it were an April Fool's joke, but it'ain't. The City Council's Transportation Committee approved the taxi fare we've been whining about for a while. We know it's probably overdue, but that doesn't mean it won't cut into our beer money....
