Arenda Troutman, former Chicago Alderman of the 20th ward, was sentenced today to four years in prison on mail fraud and tax fraud charges. Troutman was arrested a little over two years ago and was overheard on a wiretap saying, "Well the thing is, most aldermen, most politicians are ho's." Troutman sang a different tune at her sentencing today, saying, "As God as my witness, I am no monster. I am not a criminal and I never helped criminals."

Oh, yay, my Olympics cake is finally ready. [Cake Wrecks]

Yesterday should have been a great day in Englewood, with the official opening of the new Kennedy-King College campus at 63rd and Halsted. Then Arenda Troutman (pictured) and Shirley Coleman showed up to get their natural clowns on. The two deposed and controversial aldermen claimed that they weren't invited to the opening, even though it was due to their lobbying that Kennedy-King relocated to this very part of Englewood (with possibly a little bit of...

As we wrote about on Friday, Arenda Troutman was formally indicted for accepting bribes while in office. And although the 20th ward voters already made up their minds about her, we just wanted to point out that she's pleading not guilty. Obviously, we shouldn't be surprised since she's been maintaining her innocence all along. But now that she isn't an alderman (hey, voting works after all!), we think it's less upsetting and more fun to...

The unfortunate world of Arenda Troutman came crashing down around her like so much broken glass the day the FBI came and took her off to jail. And it came crashing down around her the night she lost, fairly definitively, her re-election bid for alderman of the 20th Ward. That's not to say that she didn't give the police plenty of rocks to throw at her fragile world.

Playing a little catch-up this week after our first round of reader contributions. There's no overriding theme this time other than a general lack of foresight. To paraphrase Gov. Rod's campaign commercials, "What were they thinking?" The municipal elections offered their fair share of the ridiculous. We'd like to thank Arenda Troutman, the campaign volunteers in the 16th and 24th wards, and supporters of Bernard Stone for their special contributions. (Thanks Jerry) A Chicago man...

With most of Tuesday's election settled around the city, 24 candidates are gearing up for the special election April 17. The big story that is coming out of this vote is the role that unions played in this election. Of the twelve runoffs, five were candidates that were endorsed by the Chicago Federation of Labor. Two are union members; Leroy Jones in the 21st is a member of SEIU Local 73, and Toni Foulkes is...

Well, another municipal election has come in Chicago, and in many wards (but not all) it's gone. As expected, Richard M. Daley sailed to re-election, set to eclipse his father as the Chicago's longest-serving mayor, in spite of Ben Joravsky's best efforts. At the time of this writing, a few things are clear: there will be a few runoffs this year, including Madeline Haithcock - Bob Fioretti (2nd), Dorothy Tillman - Pat Dowell (3rd), Shirley...

Riad Skaff, an employee at O'Hare International Airport has recently been taking lessons in how to be a good employee from Arenda Troutman; Skaff was charged yesterday by federal investigators with allowing the smuggling of money onto planes headed overseas.

If there is one thing Alderman Arenda Troutman doesn't know how to do, it's lay low. You might remember Troutman, who made news earlier this month when the FBI raided her South Side home on suspicion of taking bribes. You may also remember that this didn't come out of nowhere — Troutman has been under suspicion for a while now, after allegations that she was not only dating a Black Disciple, but was leaking information about the Chicago police to him. If we were all over the papers for something like that, we wouldn't be making noise in the press about it, that's for sure. And we sure as hell wouldn't be (allegedly) accepting bribes.

The plot got a little thicker yesterday, as it was revealed that the piece of real estate that the FBI used in its bribery case against Arenda Troutman isn't even in her ward. One thing you can say about her, though, she's definitely willing to work to earn her bribe money. Free on bail as she awaits trial, Troutman went to the city council meeting yesterday, earning breathless reports from Bernie Stone about what he...

All kinds of nonsense has happened politically, so lets take a look back at the week so far: In case you live in a cave and missed the biggest news story so far this week, the FBI arrested 20th Ward Alderman Arenda Troutman on charges that she took bribes. “Well, the thing is, most alderman, most politicians are hos.” Lynn Sweet continues to think she's a blogger. We like her better when she dishes on...

Now that the feds have led 20th Ward Alderman Arenda Troutman away in handcuffs, can we really say that as many as 15 seats in the city council are in play this election year? After she was arraigned in court and released on a $10,000 bond, her attorney, Sam Adam Jr., suggested that she was being punished for helping a constituent out with a "favor." It seems that in the 20th Ward, favors can cost...

When we were young, we were told to stand up for what we believe in. We would be rewarded with a sense of self, a sense of purpose. Mayor Daley, Aldermen Howard Brookins Jr. (21st), Shirley Coleman (16th), Anthony Beale (9th), Dorothy Tillman (3rd), and Arenda Troutman (20th) stood up for what they believed in by blocking the big box ordinance. Shirley Coleman voted for the ordinance before she voted against it (we've always wanted to put that in a post). Their claim was that so-called big box stores are a necessity, especially in areas where goods are not easily accessible.

Aldermania! Chicagoist has been hot on the case of the Alderman and the Gangster, Arenda Troutman and Donnell "Scandalous" Jehan. Troutman held a press conference Tuesday that involved a shouting match between her supporters and her critics. Troutman hasnt been accused of any 'wrong-doing,' but there's plenty of juice in an alderman and a high-ranking gang member even being associates. Also, that was her lawyer talking about the wrong-doing, so that would be wrong-doing meaning acts.

As if Alderman Arenda Troutman wasn't in enough hot water, her brother is now telling the press that she was having a romantic relationship with Donnell Jehan, a fugitive who is second-in-command of the Chicago gang, the Black Disciples. Troutman's brother says that Arenda and Jehan spent a lot of time together last year and that they were lovers. So maybe that's how the letter addressed to Troutman from the Chicago Police Department ended up at Jehan's house and was found during an FBI raid. Maybe she accidentally left it there after a hot date. This is getting steamy!

Troutman lives 11 blocks away from half of Chicagoist, so were not going to talk any junk or anything (let us recall that she hasn't been accused of any wrong-doing), but wow. And you all thought aldermen didnt do anything.
