Morning Box Score: Differing Results in Crosstown Classic Tuneups
Morning Box Score: Cubs Fall to Yanks, Sox Bats Wake Up in the Desert
Stat of the day: the Cubs haven't won three straight games all season.
Morning Box Score: Diamondbacks Strike White Sox
Let the hand-wringing begin over last season's Edwin Jackson/Daniel Hudson trade. It still won't answer the White Sox' hitting woes.
Morning Box Score: Cubs, White Sox Both Pitiful
A new month didn't bring new results for the White Sox, who kicked off May with a 6-4 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. Gavin Floyd looked strong early, but fell into trouble in the fifth inning, giving up five runs. The Sox bats finally woke up late, mounting a bit of a comeback against Baltimore reliever Jason Berken. Adam Dunn cranked a tape measure shot home run to left-center in a pinch hitting role. Mark Buehrle tries to snap the Sox five-game skid tonight.
Baseball Box Score: Garza Gets Cubs Win, Sox Set Slump Record
While things are looking bright on the North Side, it's pretty ugly on the South. Matt Garza was able to grab his first Cubs win of the season vs. the Arizona Diamondbacks but the White Sox are now breaking records with their slump after another loss to the Orioles.
Baseball Box Score: Cubs Beat D-Backs, Sox Still Struggle
Things are looking brighter for the Cubs and Carlos Zambrano after a win in Arizona. The White Sox however are stuck in yet another slump after a loss to the Orioles Friday night.
Morning Box Score: D-Backs Bite Cubs, Sox Woes Evident
MLB.com's Scott Merkin called the White Sox' completed road trip "thoroughly forgettable." We disagree. It was memorable for just how feeble the hitters looked for the 11 games. Case in point, during the first inning of the Sox' 12-3 loss to the Yankees in the Bronx they had runners at second and third with no one out and couldn't score. That type of futility -- the team was 3-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base -- gives the pitchers a very small margin of error. Edwin Jackson blew up in the decisive fifth inning, struggling with his control and unable to get batters out.
Afternoon Box Score: Cubs Lose to D-Backs and More
The Cubs couldn't get a sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks today, losing 6-4 at Wrigley Field. Ryan Dempster earned his second loss of the season, giving up five runs (four earned) and 10 hits over seven innings, including an RBI triple and double to Chris Young. The Cubs' defense was shaky, as well, with Alfonso Soriano, Geovany Soto and Blake DeWitt each committing errors. Soriano hit a solo home run and Aramis Ramirez added a 2-run shot to pace the Cubs offense. The Cubs now have a day off tomorrow, then travel to Milwaukee for a series against the Brewers at Miller Park. The Cubs also received more bad news today. Pitchers Randy Wells and Andrew Cashner are both going to the disabled list. Wells has what's listed as a forearm strain, while Cashner has a strained right rotator cuff (that's not good).
Afternoon Box Score: Cubs Win, Cashner Leaves Game With Stiff Shoulder
The Cubs did what they couldn't do against Pittsburgh - take a series against a lesser opponent. But today's 6-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks may have come at a cost as Andrew Cashner, making his first major league start, left the game in the sixth inning with stiffness in his right shoulder. Before being pulled, Cashner was dealing, giving up 1 run and 2 hits in 5.1 innings. Tyler Colvin, starting his first major league game at first base in place of the injured Carlos Pena, belted a 2-run home run to pace the Cubs. Starlin Castro went 2-for 5 at the plate with an RBI.
Afternoon Box Score: Cubs Beat Diamondbacks
Carlos Peña broke a 1-1 tie with a sacrifice fly as the Cubs evened their record with a 4-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Wrigley Field. Alfonso Soriano was 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in 2 runs, including his second round-tripper of the season. Randy Wells pitched six innings to get the win. Wells struck out six and walked four as manager Mike Quade went deep into his bullpen to get Wells the win. Carlos Marmol pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his second save of the season.
Immigration Debate Reaches Wrigley Field
The debate over Arizona's controversial new immigration law will see a new battlefield this afternoon: Wrigley Field.
Wait Until Next Owners
Well, that didn't take long, did it? The Arizona Diamondbacks finished off the Cubs 5-1 on Saturday, sweeping the NLDS ... and delaying a Cubs World Series at least another year. Those of us familiar with the Cubs knew what to expect from Game Three as a soon as Rich Hill's very first pitch to Chris Young ended up in the left-field bleachers. Hill was lucky to escape the inning down only 2-0, and he...
D'backs Bite Cubs
In Game One of the NLDS, the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Cubs 3-1, taking a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series. The big question is whether Cubs skipper Lou Piniella pulled Carlos Zambrano too soon. The Cubs ace was dealing, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out eight. The Diamondbacks' Brandon Webb matched Zambrano pitch for pitch, resulting in a 1-1 tie after the sixth. Yet Piniella pulled Z after six innings...
Cubs Clinch Central
The Cubs have clinched the NL Central crown -- and with two games to spare! Following a three game sweep at the hands of the Florida Marlins, things were looking sketchy, but the Brewers kept on losing, too. When the Cubs returned to the win column in Cincinnati on Friday night, and Milwaukee lost yet again, the final two games were subtracted from the magic number and the Cubs earned a berth in the postseason...
Cubs for Sale
After months of speculation that the Cubs might be put up for sale as part of a restructuring or sale of Tribune Co., almost immediately after the board's approval of Chicago billionaire Sam Zell's offer, news came that the team would in fact be sold. Now the handicapping can begin on who the new owner will be. There has certainly been no shortage of potential bidders mentioned. Of course, that was before the Cubs went...
Female Ump Calls the Shots at Cubs Game
There's a misconception as old as time that says women aren't as interested in sports as men. While we of the fairer species of Chicagoist may not get into the heated discussions that the brawnier side does - nor can we rely on it as a conversation tactic when meeting a new fellow female - we do have room in our vast, vast brains (and hearts) for sports. Our personal favorite is America's pastime, baseball....
Sox Extend Vasquez's Contract
Chicagoist is becoming increasingly concerned about Sox GM Kenny Williams and his mental state. Has he been overworked the past few years? Does he need a break? Is he trying to get himself fired? Does he covet some scouting job with the New York Mets? Otherwise, we're at a loss to explain his handling of the White Sox starting rotation since the end of last season. In early December, he traded Freddy Garcia, a workhorse...
Absolute Cintron
With the AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers in town for a 3-game set this week, Sox fan were anxious to see how their team would play against the only team in baseball with a better record. Fans would get a better idea whether the Tigers are for real, or simply got off to a hot start.
Sox Pull off Another Trade. More Deals to Follow?
Kenny Williams sure has been busy since the White Sox won the World Series. Had he simply brought back most of last year's roster, the Sox would have been a favorite to repeat. However, the taste of victory seems to have fueled an organizational urge to do everything possible ensure another trophy. Are the White Sox positioning themselves to do what the Bulls did in the 90's?
Have the Cubs Filled Their Broadcast Booth?
As Chicagoist reported previously, the Cubs had a couple high profile vacancies in their broadcast booth to fill this off-season after both Chip Caray and Steve Stone.
