Evanston's Eddie Vedder -- a hometown boy who has since made good in a little band named Pearl Jam -- performed the first of two sold-out solo shows at The Auditorium Theatre last Thursday. We admit we went into the show with low expectations since we honestly do enjoy Vedder but were less than impressed with his first solo outing, the Into The Wild soundtrack. We figured selections from that album would feature prominently and we weren't too excited about that prospect.
Back in 1988 there were some pretty cool films on the screen. Beetlejuice, Cocktail, Big, Who Framed Rodger Rabbit, Coming To America, Dangerous Liasons, and the list goes on and on. Near the top of our favorites that year were Steve Martin and Michael Caine in the movie Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
had some impressive credentials when it set out on its national tour. Oddly enough, its last engagement is here in Chicago at The Auditorium Theatre in the south loop.
There was something going on sale that we can’t quite remember. What was that? It was something that we were supposed to be all excited about. Some group was getting back together… The Sheriffs? That can’t be right. We’re being driven to tears by this. Seattlest would have been all over these tickets if the band hadn’t sold out last night. We’re much more forgiving than that. Hell, we’re all for grabbing the money and...
Where can we spend, spend, spend that paycheck? Perhaps a few of these shows going on sale this weekend will empty out that wallet. Well, the presale is happening today at 10:00 a.m. for Wilco. Don’t be a “turkey” and miss out on this, or Jeff Tweedy just might punch you in the face. Wilco will be at the Auditorium Theatre once again for a pair of shows during the biggest party weekend of the...
Chicagoist isn't one to brag, but we had a golden ticket to see Tom Waits last night at the Auditorium Theatre. While we were blubbering like a five-year-old on his first day in kindergarten as Waits sang an appropriately boozy rendition of "Tom Traubert's Blues", we wondered if we could name a beer that we wrote a review over a year ago "beer of the week." We decided, "Why not?"
Well, it's not gonna be outside and we're pretty sure they won't let bottled water in, no matter how much we beg, but Radiohead are playing Chicago! June 19th and 20th are the big dates and the Auditorium Theatre is the place. Tickets go on sale this Saturday, May 6th at 10 am via Ticketmaster. It looks as though Radiohead is taking a cue from the White Stripes, Beck and others to use this intimate...
Chicagoist headed to the historic Auditorium Theatre to see the first of three shows by the White Stripes Monday evening. The stage was set in the requisite red, white, and black that the band has branded themselves in with painted white palm trees and a red and black backdrop of palm trees. The stage was full of all the goodies that Jack and Meg need to create their staccato and sustain sounds, from extra...
The lack of flu shots this season is the proverbial chicken that is now coming home to roost; lots of people in the Chicagoist offices have been knocked out with various winter ailments. Events at The Oprah Winfrey Show this week proved that the famous and buxom are no more immune to illness than the anonymous and flat-chested. During an Oprah taping, Jessica Simpson became dehydrated due to a stomach virus. Thanks to the outstanding...
Last week, the first dates for Bob Dylan’s 2005 Tour were announced and they include a five-night run at the Auditorium Theatre. What’s that you say? Big deal? Dylan tours all the time? Well, yes. But it’s not every day that you see a double bill of Dylan with Merle Haggard and the Strangers. Throw in previous tour mate Amos Lee and you’ve got “The Bob Dylan Show” from April 1st through April 6th.
Through Dec. 26
When it comes to vintage Broadway musicals (well, vintage in the “Andrew Lloyd Webber late-’70s imported pop-opera crapfest” sense), Evita rocks the top of our chart. Subtle it ain’t, nor is it the smartest show in the world, but it’s chock full of catchy kitschy tunes, and sometimes that’s all we can handle at the end of a dreary workweek. And where else can you see three honest-to-God historical figurines—post-World War II Argentine president Juan Peron, his actress/social climber wife Eva, and communist revolutionary Che Guevara—singing at each other in faux-Latin accents to quasi-disco rhythms onstage?
If you’re unable to find your local music geek today, try checking their bedroom. They’ll likely be there with a monster set of headphones and listening to an album that is spoken of in the most reverential tones this side of your local monastery: Brian Wilson’s Smile. The former Beach Boy’s “lost masterwork” goes on sale today for the first time since it was conceived of more than 37 years ago.
The Auditorium Theatre announced yesterday that it will be hosting two "The Lord of the Rings Symphony: A Symphony in Six Movements" concerts in early October. Composed by Academy Award winner Howard Shore, the performances feature more than 200 musicians and singers, music from all three movies performed by the World Festival Symphony Orchestra, both adult and children's choirs, guest vocalist Sissel, synchronized projections of original concept and storyboard artwork from the movies, and a special appearance by Shore himself. Tickets go on sale on Monday.
