What would Earth look like if it had rings like Saturn? This amazing video shows what it would look like both from outer space and from down here, looking up. So freaking cool. [via]

In the early bout, Cleveland's Burning River All-Stars had no problem dispatching the WCR's Second Wind team in their debut, 80-38. In the main event, the WCR's got out to a strong early lead off of big jams from the likes of Beth Amphetamine, Athena DeCrime, Shocka Conduit, and Ruth Enasia. At the break, the Rollers found themselves with a healthy 58-33 lead. Thanks, in part, to a big 20 point jam from Ruth Enasia, the Rollers extended their lead even more in the second half, at one point leading by almost 30 points. But the Charm City Roller Girls would mount a comeback, chipping away at the lead, closing in to within 13 points - just one big jam - of the Rollers. But a last stand on the final jams of the night helped the Rollers hold firm and when the clock hit zero, the Rollers had held off Charm City and prevailed 117-98 for another huge victory.
We love baseball. And while Sox fans outnumber Cubs fans in the office, one thing we can all agree on is that we're big fans of Bobby Scales, the Cubs infielder who has languished in the minors for over ten years, bouncing around from team to team. The Southfield, Michigan native has played well for the Cubs since his call-up two weeks ago and he's captured the hearts of Cubs fans: a 31-year-old rookie, living the dream and soaking up every second. And, oh, he's helped the team, too, most recently scoring today's winning run.
We've admired Richard Simmons since the 1970s, when we switched from the Jim Morrison Whiskey Diet to a more balanced one in order to once again look good in our leather pants. Simmons' willingness to be himself (Swarovski crystal tank tops? hell yes), ability to inspire people to better themselves, sense of humor, and entrepreneurial moxie make him a true American success story. Yesterday, we got a chance to meet Simmons at Union Station, where he was helping Ocean Spray to promote their new Cranergy energy drink while greeting befuddled commuters, posing for lots of cell phone and iPhone pictures and sweatin' to oldies. As an added bonus, we got to hand-deliver a portrait we had made of him a few years ago, and got a kiss on the hand in exchange.
The wonders of the future that our parents were promised are finally coming to fruition. While jet packs have a long and storied history, the common man is still, sadly, jet pack-less. However, yesterday in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, we were offered a glimpse of what could finally be a mass-produced personal jet pack. Inventor Glenn Martin, of New Zealand's Martin Aircraft Co., proudly unveiled "the world's first practical jet pack" yesterday at Oshkosh's Experimental Aircraft Association's AirVenture show. Martin's 16-year old son, Harrison, piloted the pack, which lifted off the ground a few feet and hovered for a few moments.
Yeargh, we wish organizations still had letterhead this pretty.
Well, Lou was already gonna be at The Pitchfork Music Festival (July 18-20) anyway since Dinosaur Jr is playing that Sunday, but now he'll be there opening night as well, leading Sebadoh through Bubble and Scrape! Other new additions are: The Hold Steady (squee!), Elf Power, Caribou, Icy Demons, Boban Markovic Orkestar, Titus Andronicus, Bon Iver, Times New Viking, HEALTH, High Places, and Mahjongg.
Yes, that's a CPD horse in a Santa hat. If Chicagoist staffers put together a list of the Sexiest Men Alive, Anthony Bourdain would be waaaaay high on the list. Like, Ron Huberman high. Bourdain is reading at the Borders at 830 N. Michigan tonight at 7 p.m. Is it gross if we say "delicious"? Maybe? OK. Everybody's got a hobby ... but whittling instruments out of vegetables and playing them in an orchestra?...
