The seeds for a recent visit to Juicy Wine Company for brunch started with a spirited discussion over where to find a good bloody mary. Every item on Juicy's brunch menu, served Saturday and Sunday - is $5 and we wondered if we would be served a quality bloody mary for the price.

The corner of Dempster and Chicago in Evanston still retains some vestiges of its hippie past, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It actually reminds us of the less annoying parts of Lincoln and Wicker Parks. We've been fans of Bagel Art in Evanston for as long as we can remember; we usually have a sesame seed bagel with plain cream cheese every morning on the way to work. They also make a few good sandwiches for a quick bite during the work day, fuel for grinding out miles on the old Green Bay Road bike trail during summer, or just futzing around Evanston.
We sometimes feel that turkey is the ugly stepchild of sandwich meats. Why get dry, boring turkey when crispy bacon, juicy roast beef or succulent ham are calling? When paired with the right ingredients, turkey doesn't become a liability—it becomes an asset.
Got any plans for August 19? If not, you should consider brunch at Manny's Coffee Shop and Deli. Not only would you get the opportunity to munch on classic deli faves like lox and bagels, noodle kugel, corned beef sandwiches, pastrami sandwiches, and potato pancakes (not to mention salads, eggs and desserts), but you would also be supporting a good cause. Bright Pink is an organization dedicated to educating and supporting women who have a high risk of breast or ovarian cancer. One strong supporter of the group says that the organization "is not just another breast cancer organization, but rather [it] is committed to spearheading a fresh and empowering movement among young women. We believe in the beauty and strength of women. The organization exists to enlighten and empower high-risk individuals to take control of their breast health for a better, brighter future." Sounds good to us. In addition to the brunch, there is also a silent auction that will feature items ranging from a week's vacation at a 5-star resort in Cabo ($5,000 dollar value) to skydiving jumps. Also mentioned were the more traditional spa visits and restaurant experiences. Manny's is hosting this event out of the goodness of their hearts and their strong belief in what Bright Pink is doing for young women across the country. All proceeds from the brunch and auction will benefit Bright Pink.
Chicagoist loves to spend weekend mornings grabbing a coffee and a treat, and heading down to the lake to enjoy it. And not just so we can be eating a huge calorie-packed Danish while all the runners are flying by, either. It’s a really nice way to ease into the weekend.
Northlake is fearful that its Entenmann's bakery will be closed and that its products will be produced out of state. The plant employs more than 300 people, many of whom are long-time employees because the plant has been there for 40 years. Employees say that a few months ago they saw signs that the plant may close. The first sign was when the plant stopped producing bagels (now produced in Orlando) and Little Bites (now produced in New York). Another sign was when the factory stopped ordering flour, sugar, and boxes that they put the cake in. Also, Entenmann's used bake around the clock and now they're down to two shifts.
Just a reminder: DailyCandy is now available for Chicago. The first issue profiles JB's Deli, which is hidden inside Gordono's Pharmacy on North Clark Street at West Catalpa Avenue. JB's serves up New York, kosher-style deli food, such as corned beef, lox, and New York style bagels, which are flown in from New York every day. Chicagoist could really go for a good NY-style bagel right about now.
