Dry your eyes, kiddies - the world will very likely continue to spin after Opes packs her bag and hustles over to the west coast. But while we're all in a collective state of mourning, let's turn to the internet to find us some shining examples of the Way Things Used To Be. Throughout Oprah's long and storied career, through the tabloid weight rollercoaster coverage and the choruses of "look at her hair!" photos throughout the years, we could always count on Ms. Winfrey to bring us the hard news, the soft news, the loopy medical advice, the celebrity softball interviews, and the occasional discussions of va-jay-jay painin'.

Windy City Rollers Storm Back Into Action

You know what we've been craving? Roller derby. Thank Heavens, there's more on the way. The ladies of the Windy City Roller All-Star squad have their work cut out for them against the Baltimore's Charm City All-Stars. According to the WCR:

Windy City Rollers Sink Seattle

Last time we checked in with the ladies of the Windy City Rollers, the All Star Squad was reeling from a heartbreaker of a loss to Philadelphia. This past weekend, though, the ladies traveled to the Left Coast and got back in the win column by upending the Rat City Roller Girls 122-94. We'll update if we get any more information on a recap but we can tell you that their next bout will be in just a few weeks - Saturday, August 29 - at the UIC Pavilion as they take on the Charm City Roller Girls of Baltimore.

Crazy wild lineup for the Saturday installment of the Tomorrow Never Knows festival at Schubas. Let's take a look, shall we?

Driving or hitching to Oak Brook to hear an Edgar Allen Poe recitation probably isn’t topping your weekend plans. But with “The Madness of Edgar Allen Poe,” the First Folio Shakespeare Festival sweetens the deal. They stage the performance of a few of Poe’s more frightening short stories, and the charming but creepy true account of the author’s courtship and marriage of his teenage cousin Virginia, at the historic Mayslake Peabody Estate. Poe might have...

If you’re not totally familiar with The Hideout, you’re not alone. It’s not called “The Hideout” for no reason – it’s tucked away amidst warehouses and a U.S.P.S. processing center in the gritty industrial neighborhood just south of the North Branch of the Chicago River. A hand-painted “Hideout Block Party, an unpretentious celebration of local, national, and international talent that ends in a nice donation to charity, and this year’s lineup challenges Pitchfork for the...

Two weeks into the season, the White Sox had looked mediocre at best. Wednesday night was an entirely different story. On any other night, two Jim Thome homers and a Jermaine Dye grand slam would be the big news. But not Wednesday.

A few months ago, we mentioned Sprint's expansion of their wireless market in Chicago. Now there's a little more to the story.

Chicagoist needs to stop making bets that the Smashing Pumpkins will play Lollapalooza this year. With Pearl Jam already rumored to headline and the Pumpkins playing every fest known to man this summer, we thought that Billy Corgan would actually have some sort of allegiance to our fair town. Not so fast.

People are hurting now that those electricity rate increases are hitting home, and not just from head injuries suffered from passing out after they opened January's bill. ComEd bills have jumped an average of 24%, but just be glad you don't live downstate, where some Ameren customers' bills have doubled or tripled. On Friday, a group of Democratic state representatives renewed the push to roll back the rate increases and reinstate a freeze for another...

Chicagoist can't get that damn story out of our head now, but "Circle of Life" was the first thing that we thought when we heard that former Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa is about to sign a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers in hopes of returning to "the show."

Normally, throwing items onto the field of play in any sport will result in getting the boot. But this Sunday, when the Chicago Storm host the Detroit Ignition on Sunday, December 17th at 5pm fans will be encouraged to toss items on the field. The Storm are partnering with the Chicagoland Chapter of the Salvation Army for the 2nd Annual Teddy Bear Toss. Fans are actually encouraged to toss a teddy bear or any other...

If you're hiking, consider charging up your iPod, as Seattlest finds out that a man lost during a hike was found by the glow of his iPod. That cleverness seems to be devoid in cops who were using police cruiser instant messaging clients - although we imagine IMs "so are you nakie" to be included in cop shows, just for realism. If only the cops were busting the Hummer-driving jerk who made a poor...

Now that we’re finished with school, Chicagoist gets a little nostalgic this time of year. We’re always a little jealous of the kiddies we see shopping for their pencils, notebooks and Trapper Keepers, or whatever it is they’re buying these days. We would have hated that stupid Easy Button, by the way, because the shopping was one of the best parts about going back to school. We also liked catching up on all the gossip...

We -ists are an eclectic bunch, but there's a couple of things we all love: famous people, social causes, and wacky local facts. Join us as we starf**k, get virtuous, and learn across the -ist network! Austinist starts us off right by filling the famous person quota by interviewing Lewis Black, covers the social cause with a non-profit car sharing company, and gives us more wacky local facts than we can handle with Austin by...

LAist has so much fun this week! They go to E3, where they overhear the timeless remark "Man, this is where nerdy girls get laid." Is that a promise? They also give us this week's best CDs and make us realize that LA is the best place to use Zillow. Ah, Houstonist. They're biking to work, that is, if they can figure out how to get there. That's right, Mapquest says "Houston had the...

We mentioned last week that the Bears were meeting with quarterback Brian Griese over the weekend. We guess the meeting went well, because yesterday the Bears inked him to a 5-year deal. After being cut by Tampa Bay in a salary cap move, he received inquiries from Cincinnati Miami, Baltimore and Oakland. Tampa even wanted to re-sign him to differently structured deal. But he chose to sign with the Bears, at least in part because...

Throughout Florida and Arizona, players begin reporting to Spring Training to begin preparation for the 2006 season. However, it's looking like one play who won't be reporting to any camp is former Cubs outfielder Sammy Sosa, who turned down an offer from the Washington Nationals. The only Major League offer Sosa received, the Nats deal only offered a non-guaranteed 1-year, $500,000 deal. Having already turned down offers from teams in Japan and overtures from the Dominican team to play in the upcoming World Baseball Championships, Sosa's agent said, "... I can say, with reasonable certainty, that we've seen Sammy in a baseball uniform for the last time."

Chicagoist remembers this kid at day camp who'd gladly give up his Jell-o pudding cup in return for some grapes. We think he might be working in the front office for the Baltimore Orioles these days. That's the only explaination we can come up with to explain how, for the second year in a row, the Cubs have been able to jettison a disgruntled disappointment of an outfielder to the O's.

Last year Men's Fitness magazine named us the 5th fattest city. This year we took top honors. Chicago is THE fattest city in America.

Kenny Williams sure has been busy since the White Sox won the World Series. Had he simply brought back most of last year's roster, the Sox would have been a favorite to repeat. However, the taste of victory seems to have fueled an organizational urge to do everything possible ensure another trophy. Are the White Sox positioning themselves to do what the Bulls did in the 90's?

There's not much known right now, but a plane has gone off the runway, through a retaining wall, onto a field and onto Central Ave. at Midway Airport. A warming bus has been sent out and everyone has been evacuated off the plane. It seems like everyone's ok. Weather is to blame.

The biggest off-season question on all White Sox fans' minds was whether Paul Konerko would return or not. With his MVP performance through the playoffs, Konerko expected to receive a number of huge contract offers. While there were a couple offers from other teams, Paulie chose to stay with the White Sox, signing a 5-year, $60 million deal. Initially wanting to sign Konerko to a 4 year deal, Sox GM Kenny Williams matched the contract length other teams offered. Konerko said right after the World Series that all things being equal, he'd choose the Sox over another team -- which is exactly what he did.

Though it innocently “started out as a big joke”, the song “Don’t Stop Believin’” has become the unofficial theme song of the White Sox run at the World Series title. It’s not surprising that all this started thanks to A.J. Pierzynski, the Sox player who’s been behind other controversial calls in the postseason. In a Rick Morrissey column, Piersynski says he and other Sox players were listening to a lounge singer in a Baltimore bar...

In a game that featured two of the NFL's top defenses and two offenses relying on backup QBs, the Bears beat the Baltimore Ravens 10-6 at Soldier Field. The Bears marched 78 yards down the field and scored a TD at the end of the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead. The rest of the game's scoring was limited to 3 field goals -- two by the Ravens in the 2nd quarter and one...

Labor Day is traditionally the symbolic end of summer in Chicago, but for the local art scene it marks a major transition. Chicagoist missed a rash of summer exhibition closings last weekend but, as much as we procrastinate, don’t plan to make the same mistake this weekend. Schneider Gallery’s Portrait closes Saturday. The exhibit brings together seven photographers who capture their subjects unconventionally but in deeply affecting and sometimes freaky ways. Down the block, Saslow...

Baseball's trading deadline is less than a week away, and neither Chicago team has made a big move yet. However, daily rumors surround the Sox and a number of high profile pitchers that are on the block. The two biggest names mentioned, in terms of starting pitchers, are A.J. Burnett and Jason Schmidt. While a deal sending Burnett to Baltimore looked like a done deal a few days ago, that deal has fallen apart and...

Baseball's non-waiver trading deadline is less than two weeks away, and teams are starting to make some moves to either bolster their rosters for a playoff run or shipping out expensive and/or expiring contracts.

Everybody knows that the Cubs are a much bigger draw at Wrigley than the White Sox are at U.S. Cellular. And even though we cheer for the White Sox, Chicagoist agrees that Wrigley is a great place to watch a game -- we certainly don't want to blow it up! But we also think that The Cell gets an undeserved bad rap -- especially following the three years of enhancements. Formerly known as Comiskey Park,...
