Bicyclist Struck, Killed on Dan Ryan Expressway

AS listed in yesterday's "Extra Extra," Edgewater resident Christopher Hippchen was struck and killed in northbound express lanes of the Dan Ryan expressway while riding his bicycle. Illinois State Police say Hippchen, who didn't own a car and worked part-time as a cook for a catering company at Soldier Field, was hit around 9 p.m. Sunday after being stuck by an SUV near 55th Street. Neither the state police nor Hippchen's friends or family know what he was doing at that location. Keisha West, who was driving on the Dan Ryan at the time, told the Tribune, "he looked like one of those bike messengers waiting at a stoplight. It looked like he was about to dart out." She said she thought she was imagining things. more ›

Bicyclist's Family: Charge Other Driver, Too

As the family of Jepson Livingston continues to reel from his death, members of his family are demanding that the second driver involved in the incident that killed him be charged. Tyrice Pryor, 21, is being held on $2 million bond with a first-degree murder charge for striking and killing Jepson on Tuesday afternoon. Pryor was driving a van that was chasing another vehicle. The cars were speeding east on Diversey when they collided, sending one crashing through a gate in front of an auto shop while the van Pryor was driving careened across the street and struck Livingston, who was riding his bike west-bound. Part of the incident was captured by surveillance video which police have been using to try to identify those involved. more ›

Jepson Livingston was struck by a van yesterday afternoon in the 3800 block of West Diversey; the driver of the van then fled on foot. ABC 7 reports police have video from a nearby traffic camera they hope gives them some clues. more ›

Bad Night for Taxis

Last night was an awful time to be in the way of a taxi. First, a taxi hit a bicyclist near Grant Park, severely injuring the rider. The accident happened at East Balbo and South Columbus Drives around 10 p.m. last night. Chicago police say the taxi had the right of way in the accident so no citations were issued to the driver; the rider was last reported in critical condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Later, two taxis collided on Dearborn, sending one into Petterino's (150 N. Dearborn). No one was hurt, but it was the second time a taxi had hit the restaurant in a little over a month, the previous accident happening on April 14. more ›
