In spite of opposition from the Southport Neighbors Association, the Chicago City Council gave the Chicago Cubs permission today to hold three concerts at Wrigley Field this July. Neighborhood Ald. Tom Tunney (44th) signed the plan and promised to “minimize the concerns of the community at large.” Pop legends Billy Joel and Elton John are slated to play a pair of shows together at the stadium (July 16 and 21) and country group Rascal Flatts will squeeze a date in between (July 18). Part of the protest from the Southport Neighbors Association centered on the fact that the Rascal Flatts show is during the same weekend as their annual Summer on Southport festival. The concerts come during an 11-day stretch during which the Cubs will be off for the All-Star break and then on the east coast. [Tribune]

Elton & Joel Add Second Wrigley Date

Even though we weren't as excited about it as some people, we knew tickets for the July 21 Elton John-Billy Joel concert at Wrigley Field would sell pretty fast. So, too, it seems, did the promoters. In a move that's not really a surprise, a second date has been added. The promoters sent an email to ticket holders informing them of the decision. The original show on July 21 is still on but the second show will now happen on July 16. In addition to the second show, ticket holders for the 21st can stop by this website and apply to have their tickets swapped for "comparable" seats for the show on the 16th if they prefer. The deadline for applying for the seat swap is 5 p.m. this Saturday, February 21. So far, there's no concrete general on sale information for the newly added show but it can't be too far away.

Elton John, Billy Joel To Play Wrigley

This year's Wrigley Summer Concert will have piano-pop fans delighted. The rest of us? Eh. In a continued effort to make sure only nostalgia acts over the age of 55 play concerts there, Elton John and Billy Joel are teaming up for this year's summer concert at Wrigley, being held on July 21. We guess the Kansas-Moody Blues juggernaut couldn't squeeze Chicago in. In keeping with Wrigley Field tradition, ticket prices have also been set at buyer-friendly rates of $175, $95, and $55 (before the jacked-up fees, of course).

We just *had* to keep the subject from our Jam update email as the title of this post, it's just too priceless. We have a sneaking suspicion that unless you have cash burning a hole in your pocket, most of you will be spending your dough on costumes and candy-themed adult beverages this weekend.

Time to get that credit card out of hibernation and spend away, my friends! This week must mark the proper amount of time between on sale dates and concert dates that corresponds to warm weather coming back to Chicago. Kaiser Chiefs will be out in support of their soon-to-be-released album Yours Truly, Angry Mob off which the single “Ruby” we were told sounds like Morrissey fronting Cheap Trick. While this image still has us reeling,...

The Tribune caught up with local-boy-made-good Richard Marx and discovered that he’s -– wait for it -– just a regular guy living on the North Shore. And writing country music.

As sure as the return of the fully-unveiled Bean draws fresh hordes of gawking tourists and grateful photographers, the return of reliable cash-cows to the stage draw pieces of that same audience back for a familiar good time. We’ve already covered the return of the anti-musical musical that is Urinetown, bunking at the Mercury Theater for the foreseeable future. A few old favorites follow their lead downtown:

Chicagoist last saw OK Go when the first cries of "next big thing outta Chicago" were heard and were not that impressed. Friday night at the Metro, however, it was possible to see why those cries are being heard again. OK Go are a band that is not afraid to wear their influences on their sleeve and they let those influences show from the 2nd song "No Sign of Life" which was very Pixies-esque...
