We always thought it was pretty ridiculous when students at other schools got the second-tier holidays off of school — you know, your Columbus Days and your Presidents' Days. It seemed almost as ridiculous (read: unfair) as when the kid down the street got ten dollars from the tooth fairy while we got a quarter. Why celebrate some presidents' birthdays by sitting at home but celebrate another's when it rolls around? And didn't they "discover"...

Every kid wants to run away and join the circus. The elephants! The striped tents! The cotton candy! We wanted to be the strong man or the graceful trapeze artist or for some of us, the bearded lady. Most of all, we wanted to experience that magic was real and unbelievable things could happen everyday.
Chicagoist isn't really big on celebrating Easter, usually Easter is just another Sunday for us. But this year it falls on the same weekend as two of our family member's birthdays, so celebration is in order. In preparation for tomorrow's party, we prepared a kind of traditional Easter dish, deviled eggs. But let's be honest. We'd eat the shit out of these things any day of the year! They're so good.
So, today is Presidents' Day. All you lucky financiers, government employees, library workers and Chicago Public School kids have the day off. We're pretty sure when we were kids, we got both Lincoln and Washington's birthdays off as separate holidays! Sweet. Talk about a short month. We don't really get it so much anymore, though. Real ID act which gave The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) the authority over the contents of a national ID card was tacked onto a tsunami relief bill back in 2005. It passed in the US House (368-58) and Senate (100-0)
Who needs the cold? We're basking in our radiators and skimming the events of the past weekend:
Yesterday, Gov. Blago signed a bill that gives every IL community the authority to ban smoking in bars & restaurants. Of course everyone is arguing.. it's such a touchy subject and everyone's got an opinion on whether smoking should be banned or not. Anyone want to start a betting calendar on the month/day/year Chicago inacts the ban?
While Lollapalooza is casting a big shadow over the other music events this summer, you don’t need to spend $85 (or $100 or $115) to see live music in the city. Metromix has posted dates for the various fests that celebrate local neighborhoods and musical genres this summer. Lineups for the neighborhood fests have yet to be announced but the schedules for the 21st Annual Chicago Gospel Music Festival and the 22nd Annual Chicago Blues Festival are out. Plus, they’re free.
