Blackhawks Fall To Phoenix more ›

Just like the Bulls, the Blackhawks had their United Center homecoming spoiled by losing as the St. Louis Blues got the best of the 'Hawks 3-2. Patrick Kane got the 'Hawks off to a good start and a 1-0 lead with a backhand goal a little over seven minutes in to the game. But a bad second period sunk the 'Hawks as the Blues scored three straight goals in an eight minute span to take a 3-1 lead heading into the third period. Marian Hossa cut into the lead with a short-handed goal early in the third, but the 'Hawks weren't able to get any closer and the Blues held on for the win. The 'Hawks nearly doubled the Blues up on shots, 34-19, but the Blues made theirs count; Huet got the nod in goal with an ill Antti Niemi sitting out a scheduled start. The Phoenix Coyotes come skating into town Friday as the 'Hawks look to bounce back into the win column (7:30 p.m., CSN+). more ›

The Blackhawks wrapped up their Disney-On-Ice road trip last night but found themselves having less success than their United Center counterparts as they fell to the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2. The 'Canes took the lead with a goal in the waning seconds of the first period and Chicago answered with a Marian Hossa goal a few minutes into the second. Carolina answered late in the second to take a 2-1 edge and the 'Hawks once again tied the game up as Andrew Ladd scored a few minutes in to the third period. But the 'Canes scored twice in a 26 second span at the midway point of the third to take a two-goal lead they wouldn't relinquish. Huet got 20 saves but allowed all four goals while the 'Hawks out-shot the 'Canes 41-24 but still wound up with the loss. The 'Hawks still lead the division comfortably and are in second place in the Western Conference, just 3 points behind San Jose. The team also gets 4 of the next 6 games at home before the two-week Olympic break. Next up is a return to the UC to face St. Louis on Wednesday (7:30 p.m., CSN). more ›

We should have known it wouldn't be that easy. The 'Hawks, second place overall in the Western Conference, jumped out to a big lead early on the first place San Jose Sharks but would have to go to overtime to earn the 4-3 victory. Chicago scored a trio of goals in a 3:21 span early in the first period to take a big 3-0 lead: Dustin Byfuglien got his 100th NHL career point with the first goal of the game, Troy Brouwer followed up less than a minute later, and Andrew Ladd netted his 10th goal of the season to round out the attack. But San Jose proved why they're one of the NHL's elite teams and fought back, scoring before the end of the first, once more in the second, and getting the equalizer early in the third, and Sharks goalie Evgeni Nabokov stopped 32 straight shots after allowing the early goals. But, despite the comeback, it was the 'Hawks night as Brouwer scored his second goal of the game 1:37 into overtime to give Chicago the win. Huet had 34 saves overall in net for the 'Hawks who remain in second place, one point back of San Jose in the Western Conference. Last night's meeting was the last of the season between the two teams. The 'Hawks are now 5-2 on the eight-game-Disney-on-Ice roadtrip and wrap it up Saturday night in Carolina (6 p.m., WGN). more ›

The Blackhawks wasted no time last night in jumping on top of the last-place Oilers en route to a 4-2 victory. Jonathan Toews scored the game's first goal less than a minute in to give the 'Hawks an early 1-0 edge. After going the rest of the first scoreless, Chicago then exploded for three goals in an eight minute span in the second to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Troy Brouwer and Dustin Byfuglien both netted goals and Marian Hossa added a power-play goal. Edmonton added a goal late in the second and showed signs of life with a goal early in the third, but the 'Hawks locked down and held on for the two-goal win. Huet started in goal and stopped 22 of 24 shots he faced. Overall, the 'Hawks out-shot the Oilers 37-24. Next up? A huge tilt with the San Jose Sharks on Thursday (9:30 p.m., CSN). The 'Hawks trail the Sharks by just two points in the Western Conference standings. more ›

With Joakim Noah hurt, Brad Miller made the most of his start at center, scoring 25 points to lead the Bulls to a 104-97 victory over Houston. The Bulls have now won two straight road games, a great improvement for a team that's struggled mightily on the road all season. All five Bulls starters scored in double-figures including 20 from Derrick Rose and a 16-14 from Taj Gibson as the team shot over 50 percent from the floor for another night. The Bulls hope their trip to Texas continues on a winning note as they take on the Spurs tomorrow night (7:30 p.m., CSN). more ›

The Blackhawks got back in the win column with a 3-1 victory over struggling Calgary. After a scoreless first, the 'Hawks jumped on top with a Patrick Kane power play goal midway through the second, Kane's 21st goal of the season. Calgary took advantage of their own power play opportunity late in the second to tie the game at 1-1. But the 'Hawks came back in the third with a Ben Eager goal early on to give the 'Hawks the lead for good. An empty net goal from Duncan Keith in the final minute extended the game out of reach. Antti Niemi made good on his nod to start in goal for the 'Hawks, stopping 19 of 20 shots he faced. The 'Hawks hope to start a new winning streak Saturday night when they head to Vancouver (9 p.m., CSN). more ›

Both teams rode winning streaks into last night's game, but Ottawa skated out the winner after ousting the Blackhawks 4-1. The Sens took a 2-0 lead in the first but Marian Hossa scored his 13th goal of the season - a short-handed goal just over six minutes in to the second period - to cut that lead in half. But Ottawa was too much, scoring another goal in the second and one more for good measure in the third to cruise to the victory even as the 'Hawks out-shot them 30-18. Huet allowed all four goals and grabbed 14 saves in net for Chicago. The 'Hawks try to bounce back tomorrow night in Calgary (8:30 p.m., CSN). more ›

The 'Hawks skated into Detroit Sunday morning and skated out with their third-straight win in a 4-3 shootout victory. The 'Hawks got off to a fast start, opening up a 2-0 lead in the first period thanks to a Troy Brouwer goal and a Patrick Kane power play goal. Detroit answered with a goal before the first intermission to cut the lead to 2-1 and continued into the second by tying the game 2-2. Patrick Sharp gave the 'Hawks the lead again midway through the second period but Detroit eventually evened up the game at 3-3 midway through the third. Regulation ended at 3-3 and the overtime flew by at a furious pace with the score remaining at 3-3. In the shootout, Toews and Hossa both scored for the 'Hawks and Sharp put away the game-winner. The game also featured a rare stat for this year's 'Hawks: they were actually outshot by their opponent. Antti Niemi was sharp in goal with 35 saves on 38 shots faced plus an additional save in the shootout. At 34-11-4, the 'Hawks have the best record in the NHL and the three-game winning streak will give them needed momentum as, starting tomorrow night, they play six games in twelve days, all on the road. The trip continues tomorrow night in Ottawa (6:30 p.m., CSN). more ›

It's a rare losing streak for the NHL-best Blackhawks who lost to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim 3-1, their second straight loss. The Ducks didn't use the Flying V to get the victory, just spectacular goal-tending from Jonas Hiller who stopped 42 of 43 shots he faced from the 'Hawks, allowing only a third period power play goal by Duncan Keith. Meanwhile, the Ducks only got off 12 shots the entire game but got two past Antti Niemi (the Ducks' third goal came on an empty netter in the closing seconds of the game). The 'Hawks get a few days of rest before hosting Columbus on Thursday (7:30 p.m., CSN) and then hitting the road for two weeks thanks to Disney On Ice. more ›

The Boston Bruins jumped out to an early lead, but the Blackhawks stormed back to bust an Original Six foe by a 5-2 final. A pair of early Bruins goals put the 'Hawks down 2-0 halfway through the first period but Duncan Keith and Tomas Kopecky both scored before the first intermission to send the game to the second tied. From there, the 'Hawks kept rolling. Andrew Ladd scored next for the 'Hawks early in the second and Keith followed at the halfway mark with his second goal of the game. Patrick Kane scored late in the third with the cherry-on-top goal. Keith had an assist to go along with his pair of goals and Ben Eager had a pair of assists as well. After allowing those first two goals - one even-strength, the other a power play - Antti Niemi settled down, saving the rest of the shots he faced (19 overall). The win was the 'Hawks fifth straight and 12th in their last 14, a streak they hope to keep going when they visit the Minnesota Wild tomorrow night (7 p.m., CSN). more ›

The Blackhawks threw a lot of money at an injured Marian Hossa this past off-season, but now that he's back at full-strength, it's starting to pay off. Hossa got two goals for the second straight game to help push the Blackhawks past the Minnesota Wild 4-1. The Wild struck first just over midway through the first period, but John Madden tied it up for the 'Hawks. Hossa scored the eventual game-winner halfway through the second period, and then Patrick Kane scored a power play goal early in the third followed by Hossa's second goal of the game to extend the lead. Huet had 19 saves in goal and the 'Hawks out-shot the Wild 33-20. The win puts the 'Hawks in sole possession of first place in the Western Conference and they'll try to extend their winning streak to five games when they visit the Bruins on Thursday (6 p.m., CSN). more ›

The Blackhawks kept on rolling last night, beating the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim 5-2 for their third straight win and their 10th win in their last 12. After a scoreless first period, Kris Versteeg got the 'Hawks on the board and Troy Brouwer added a goal to give Chicago a 2-0 lead. Marian Hossa then scored twice in the first four minutes of the third - once at full-strength and once on a power-play - to give the 'Haws a 4-0 lead that was extended again by Jonathan Toews. Two late goals by Anaheim spoiled the shutout but Antti Niemi still recorded a solid game in goal with 22 saves overall. At just past the halfway point of the season, the 'Hawks are 29-10-3 and sit atop the Western Conference in a first place tie with San Jose (61 points each). The 'Hawks welcome the Minnesota Wild tomorrow (7 p.m., VS). more ›

Don't look now but the Bulls have won four in a row after dusting Orland 101-93 last night. Derrick Rose led the Bulls with a solid 30-6-7, three other Bulls starters - Deng (14), Noah (10), and Hinrich (11) - scored in double figures and John Salmons scored 15 off the bench. The Bulls found themselves down by eight halfway through the second but went on a 15-2 run to the end the half up by four and started the second half on an 11-2 run to extend the lead. A 10-0 Orlando run in the fourth cut the lead to 5 and the Magic found themselves within 3 with less than 30 seconds to go but the Bulls hit 5 of 6 free throws to put the game away. Also put away - for now? Talk of Coach Vinny being canned. But, rest assured, we'll hear something at the next rough patch for the team. But the Bulls hope to avoid that when they welcome the OKC Thunder tomorrow night (7 p.m., CSN). more ›

The Blackhawks' Patrick Kane became the sixth Blackhawk named to a 2010 Olympic team yesterday when he was announced as a member of Team USA's roster. Speculation included Dustin Byfuglien as a possible team member as well, but Buff was left off the '10 roster. Said Kane, who has shaken off that off-season controversy, "All of my friends and family back home are really excited. It's a dream come true. It's the Olympics we're talking about. It's probably the highest stage of hockey you can play and highest competition level too." Besides Kane, other 'Hawks on Olympic teams include a trio - Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook and Jonathan Toews - for Team Canada and a pair - Marian Hossa and Tomas Kopecky - for Team Slovakia. more ›

The Blackhawks kept rolling into the New Year burning the New Jersey Devils 5-1, the 'Hawks eighth win in their last 10 games. Five different Blackhawks scored: Troy Brouwer on a power play in the first followed by Ben Eager; Andrew Ladd in the second; and Jonathan Toews and John Madden in the third. With a little over a minute and a half left to secure another shutout, Cristobal Huet let one slip by him, the only New Jersey goal of the night, he had 26 saves on the night. Patrick Kane played the hero last night as he netted a last-minute goal that propelled the 'Hawks past the Nashville Predators 5-4 in their final meeting of the regular season. The goal capped off an incredible third period that saw the teams combine for six goals. Nashville got an early lead in the opening minutes before Kane answered with a goal a few minutes later to tie the game up at 1-1. The Predators got a second period goal to take a 2-1 lead into the final period when all Hell broke loose. John Madden scored the next two goals, about six minutes apart, to put the 'Hawks up 3-2 and a minute after his second goal, Brian Campbell scored on a power play to give the 'Hawks a two-goal lead. But the Predators got back into the game, scoring the next two goals. Kane, though, came through scoring amongst a flurry of shots in front of the Nashville goal in the final minute (video below). Antti Niemi recorded 16 saves overall in the game and earned the win. And yes, that wasn't a typo earlier: even though we're not even halfway through the season, the Predators and 'Hawks - division foes - will not meet again for the rest of the 2009-2010 season. Nice move, schedule-makers. For the record, the 'Hawks took the season series 4-2. The 'Hawks are back on the road for a game in Dallas on Tuesday (7 p.m., VS). more ›

It was another overtime thriller for the Blackhawks last night and once again they came out the victors, edging the Bruins 5-4 in a shootout. After Boston tied it up at 2-2, Jonathan Toews scored in the final minute to give the Blackhawks a 3-2 lead. Boston tied the game at 3-3 early in the third but less than two minutes later, a hard shot from Brian Campbell was tipped in by Andrew Ladd to give the 'Hawks a 4-3 lead.
