Rockin' Our Turntable: Secret Colours

EP3 is Secret Colours' follow up to their 2010 self-titled album, and it continues to display the bands fondness of sounds rooted in '90s shoe-gaze, '60s British invasion, and early 70’s english metal. more ›

Tributosaurus Meets Sabbath

Tributosaurus Meets Sabbath

Those musical chameleons in Tributosaurus are tapping into the dark side with their gig tomorrow night at Martyr's. They'll be channeling the deep dark sludge of Black Sabbath. They're promising to keep the mimicry limited to the Ozzy years (before he was neutered by Sharon), when Ozzy was more petty thief and punk than Prince of Darkness, Tony Iommi's handmade fingertips (he lost his in a sheet metal press accident) kept slipping off, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward made for a rhythm section worthy of starting a war, and the group was coked to the gills making songs like "Spiral Architect," "Into the Void," and "Sweet Leaf." They'll also dip their toes into the wading pool of the Ronnie James Dio Sabbath years, but the "Black Sabbath featuring Tony Iommi" era is being rightfully ignored. more ›

Birds Of Avalon; Fuzzed-out, Freaky, and Free

Birds Of Avalon's debut, Bazaar Bazaar, hits so many sonic reference points it can tend to be an exhilerating and dizzying experience at first. It sounds like Sloan gone psych. No, it sounds like Led Zeppelin gone pop. No, that's not quite it either. Black Sabbath meets The Beatles? more ›

Empty Out Your Wallet

Empty Out Your Wallet

This week when emptying our wallet, it’s either the old guys getting back together or the new guys still climbing their way to the top. This is probably scarier visually than it used to be: Heaven and Hell Live with Black Sabbath, Megadeth and Machine Head. We say scarier because we just saw Ronnie James Dio in Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny, and we’re not sure we’d want to be in the front... more ›

The Dark Tower

The Dark Tower

Yesterday, Chicagoist took a trip over to the Tower Records downtown, where it’s all over but the shoutin’. If you wanted to own the complete Tony Orlando and Dawn series on 3 DVDs for less than twenty bucks, you were in luck. Other than that, finding recognizable artists in the dregs was a challenge (we managed to pick up recent releases from Cougars and Damone but nothing else held any appeal). It was pretty obvious... more ›

Re-Viewed: Model Rocket Scientist & Lord of the Yum Yum

Sunday night Chicagoist decided that there was no reason to get a full night's sleep, despite what Dr. Sanjay Gupta says, and we went to the Darkroom to see some artists who are using digital technology to enhance their performances or to even make their musical stylings possible. more ›

Rock, Stock, and Two Smoking Pistols

Rock, Stock, and Two Smoking Pistols

As Black Sabbath, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Sex Pistols and others are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tonight, we’re wondering how important such an institution is in a time when a “Top 100 Fill-In-The-Blank Bands Of All Time” list pops up every time we turn on the television. After all, the best AP writer David Bauder can do is to masquerade this mash note to Debbie Harry as a news story about the ceremony. more ›
