Spring is almost here and I can smell the baseball in the air; or at least hear it. What’s a South Side season without some controversy? And what’s controversy without a lethal mix of social media and White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen?
While his socks may be red, former White Sox reliever Bobby Jenks’ issues remain in black and white. The now Boston Red Sox reliever said he was affected by some front office controversy last season and some choice words have been shared through the airwaves.
Jenks in Red, but Issues Remain in Black and White
Guillen Scion Reacts Adversely to Jenks Comments
We love a good pissing contest as much as the next person. And when one starts from baseball players, even better. Baseball players who don't want to switch teams routinely rip their former organizations on the way out of town. Take former White Sox closer Bobby Jenks, who made late innings tense experiences for fans the past two seasons, had some choice words for Sox skipper Ozzie Guillen after he signed a two-year deal with the Boston Red Sox.
Sox Bid Jenks Adieu, Welcome Dunn Aboard
The White Sox cut ties to another piece of the 2005 World Series team when they non-tendered the contract of closer Bobby Jenks. The decision effectively closes the door on Jenks's career on the South Side and wasn't unexpected. One of the things GM Kenny Williams and skipper Ozzie Guillen could agree on last season was that they were unhappy with Jenks's conditioning, which they felt led to his extended stints on the disabled list the past couple of seasons.
Good News for Jenks
Suffering from lingering soreness in his calf, White Sox closer Bobby Jenks had an MRI to determine whether there was any structural damage in his lower leg. The results of the MRI were good news, as they revealed no damage. When asked about his prospect for being ready to go on Opening Day, Jenks said, "no doubt about it."
Hardball Moves
It's the middle of winter but that doesn't mean our MLB teams are standing pat. Over the weekend, the White Sox announced that they had reached one-year deals with both Carlos Quentin ($3.2 million) and closer Bobby Jenks ($7.5 million). Meanwhile, the Cubs seem to have their eye on a pair of ex-Sox: pitcher Jose Contreras and outfielder Jermaine Dye. Injuries to Ted Lilly and Carlos Silva could leave the Cubs in need of a fifth starter for the first month-plus of the season, leading to the interest in Contreras. As for Dye, the Cubs would use him as a backup in both left and right field as well as possibly at first base.
Sox Swept, Slip to Second
The White Sox found yet another way to lose to the Minnesota Twins on Thursday, losing 7-6 in 10 innings despite jumping out to an early 6-1 lead. With this series sweep, the Twins leapfrogged over the Sox to gain possession of first place in the AL Central, meaning the South Siders are currently on the outside looking in for the playoffs.
Jenks Ties Record
Those of us who pledge allegiance to a certain South Side baseball team have had precious few bright spots this season. Mark Buehrle's no-hitter and ... well, that about it. Another bright spot may come soon courtesy of Sox closer Bobby Jenks, who on Sunday tied a major league record by retiring his 41st straight batter faced. The last batter to reach base against Jenks was Ryan Garko of the Cleveland Indians back on July...
Bullpen Blows Another One
Watching the White Sox this year has been downright stomach churning. All too often they fall behind due to their anemic hitting, yet even when the team has had the lead we can never feel secure that they won't blow it.
All Star Rosters Announced
Major League Baseball announced the rosters for the July 10 All-Star Game being held in San Francisco. Chicago baseball fans will see at least three of our local guys in the game. Given the White Sox sub par season, it's not surprising that they have only one All-Star this year -- the minimum representation any team gets. Closer Bobby Jenks will be the lone Sox player on the Americal League roster this year. Quite a...
Extra, Extra
Metra still can't pay the bills. Bonus time to party on the Dan Ryan local lanes! Prince Charles hates McDonald's. Perhaps he would change his mind if he had a smoothie? Bobby Jenks, hulking pile of muscle that he is, tweaked his shoulder in spring training. So long, Burt. We'll have to find new reasons to use this picture. Lollapalooza 2007 = Pearl Jam. A con man scammed some women out of $1 million...
Sox Send Six, Cubs One
Major League Baseball announced the rosters for next week's All Star Game yesterday, and 6 members of the White Sox were selected, along with one Cub -- Carlos Zambrano.
2006 Baseball Preview
What a difference a year makes! Last year, as we embarked on a new baseball season, we discussed the eternal optimism of Chicago baseball fans in light of decades of futility. But in 2005 something most unexpected and most wonderful happened. Chicago won a World Series! And it wasn't even the Chicago team that many thought had a shot at the title. While the Cubs entered the season picked by many to reach the postseason,...
Prior, Wood Start Season on DL
Man, we hate it when, on rare occasions, we actually agree with Jay Mariotti. But he's right about the Cubs -- they're in big trouble this year. With the season starting in just a few days and their two supposed studs on the DL (what's this, the third straight year?) the Cubs don't look like legitimate playoff contenders. All spring, Cubs management continued to claim that there was nothing wrong with Kerry Wood and Mark...
1906. 1917. 2005!
Already up 3-0 on the Houston Astros in the World Series, the White Sox swept the Astros by winning Game 4 1-0. The lone run was scored by Willie Harris on a single by World Series MVP Jermaine Dye with two outs in the 8th inning.
Can't Rain on Our Parade
That positive premonition was right, as the White Sox won both games at the Cell this weekend! They took Game 1 5-3 Saturday night and won 7-6 in Game 2 Sunday night to take a 2-0 lead in the World Series at they now head down to Houston.
Bring on the Angels
Following their 5-3 victory Monday night, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim eliminated the New York Yankees and earned themselves a red eye flight to Chicago to face off against the well rested White Sox Tuesday night in the ALCS. The Sox will send Jose Contreras to the mound against The Angels' Paul Byrd.
White Sox Sweep Red Sox, Then Wait
While our Bean Town siblings warned us about counting our eggs before they hatched, we spent the weekend grilling up some nice chicken dinners in the Chicagoist HQ as the White Sox beat the Red Sox 5-3 Friday afternoon, sweeping the American League Divisional Series. The Red Sox reign is over, only a season after snapping their 86-year curse. A new champion will be crowned. Could it be the White Sox, ending our own...
White Sox Win 5-4, One Win From Advancing
While Wednesday's game was a lot closer than Tuesday's, the results were ultimately the same as the White Sox took a 2-0 series lead by beating the Red Sox 5-4.
Sox Clinch!!!
In spite of the White Sox August and September slumps and Cleveland's torrid second half, the Sox finally assured that they'll reach the postseason. It no longer matters that the Tribe cut a 15-game August 1st lead down to 1 1/2 games at one point last week. The title's ours!
