Bomb-sniffing dogs made an appearance at Lockport Township High School's East Campus yesterday after a custodian reported a bomb threat message written on a bathroom wall. Authorities found no evidence of suspicious activity, but took extra precautions this morning as classes resumed. A rash of bomb threats erupted at my high school in Pittsburgh back in the late 90s, and they practically turned into a joke. Fire drills out, bomb threats in. Not surprisingly, the source of the anarchy was a student who found it an effective way of getting out of tests. We applaud the Lockport police for taking this issue seriously, but it's time to enlist Encyclopedia Brown since he's already on the inside-job beat. [STS]

The Chicago Police Department is investigating a bomb threat made last night to the WTTW Channel 11 station. Officials say that the threat may have been tied to last night’s premiere of the station’s new LGBT documentary, Out & Proud in Chicago.

A bomb threat at DePaul and a suspicious briefcase at the Dirksen Federal Building both turned out to be nothing tonight, but the school's Loop campus was evacuated and police closed the Jackson Red and Blue Line stops while they investigated. [S-T, Trib]

If you don't want to spend time in a courthouse for jury duty, here's a little tip: Don't make a bomb threat instead. That's a pretty much guaranteed way to spend yet more time intimately involved with the criminal justice system. But no one told Addison resident Toby Owhoka, who placed a call to the Jury Commission in DuPage County yesterday, complaining that she didn't want to sit on a jury.

Let's all give a warm welcome to our newest commenter, Mr. Neil Steinberg! A 16-year-old spotted her rapist at Dunkin Donuts and called the police, who promptly arrested him. A flight from here to New York was searched following a bomb threat, and the FBI is investigating non-specific, "third-hand" threats that al-Qaida is planning on attacking Chicago malls during holiday shopping time. Doomsday, Daley, CTA, Springfield...this is pretty much a Mad Libs at this...

Jane Radostits, the DuPage County prosecutor who was killed when her state-issued car swerved into oncoming traffic may have had as many as eight drinks before driving on May 11, according to a lawsuit filled yesterday on behalf of Michele Lubinski, 36, of West Chicago. Lubinski, whose left arm and leg were broken in the crash, is seeking damages from Oak Brook's Kona Grill after lab tests revealed Radostits' blood alcohol level to be .25...

One good thing (about the only good thing, really) you can say about the CTA is that there aren’t a lot of bomb scares. That may be because the vehicles themselves are considered enough of a hazard, but we digress. We can’t remember the last time our train was sidelined for anything besides electrical problems or medical emergencies. National rail may be another matter entirely, though: An Amtrak train headed to Chicago from Washington, D.C. was detained last night when several suspicious packages were found abandoned on it.

If there was anything we learned back in the 10th Ward, it's that anything goes when you're in a struggle for power. Especially in your own neighborhood. But when we heard that 50th Ward challenger Greg Brewer's office was shut down for 2 hours by a bomb threat yesterday, we were a little shocked.

All that super security at the airport is supposed to make us feel safer, right? We mean, you didn't throw out your bottles of hot sauce and whiskey for nothing. It may be a hassle, but knowing that trained professionals are scouring every inch of every plane and passenger with bomb-sniffing dogs and high-tech detection equipment is worth the extra time in the security line, assuming of course, that said highly-trained professionals are actually doing those kinds of things.

Police say one of the CTA's own phoned in the bomb threat that closed the Brown Line for an hour on Sunday. A criminal complaint filed in federal court alleges that at 8:22 a.m. Sunday, Bilal Steward, 26, called 911 from a pay phone at the Kimball stop saying, "Kimball Terminal 12 minutes will explode." Steward worked as a train operator and the CTA put him on probation in April for absenteeism and safety violations. Two managers at the Kimball stop identified the voice on the 911 tape as Steward's. Steward denies that he made the call.
