Yesterday's Groupon deal caught us a little off guard [full disclosure: the company is a frequent advertiser with this site]. The popular discount site was offering 300-level tickets tje Bon Jovi / Kid Rock concert at Soldier Field this Saturday for $30. What a bargain, right?! Well, probably not. Offering tickets at that sort of discount just before a show means tickets probably aren't selling like hotcakes.
Groupon And ... Bon Jovi?
Monday Morning Diversion: Bon Jovi, R2-D2, and Christmas
It's a gloomy, cold Monday morning. The stress of the holidays is in full swing and that holiday break for many of you is still over a week away. Fear not, we've got something that, even if it doesn't make your day better, will at least distract you from the drudgery of your Monday morning staff meeting: Jon Bon Jovi singing a Christmas Carol to R2-D2. The song "R2-D2 We Wish You A Merry Christmas," from 1980's Christmas in the Stars: Star Wars Christmas Album, is (allegedly) the "first professional recording" made by the man who would later sing about Gina and Tommy and the prayer they lived on. If you really want to capture the moment for all eternity - or at least to listen to over and over on your iPod - you can download an MP3 of the song here. Otherwise, enjoy the Youtube'd version below.
Oscar Schmoscar: Alternatives for Academy Award Haters
More fascinated by Kelis' milkshake than Daniel Plainview's? Is the only Oscar you'll watch living in a garbage can? Then this Sunday probably means nothing to you. You're burnt out on the "glitz" and "glamor" of the night, not to mention the drama surrounding that writers strike.
Reality Check: Where's Jon Bon When You Need Him?
After rumors that Jon Bon Jovi would be the guest judge on last week's Project Runway proved to be false, with Sarah Jessica Parker filling the celebujudge role, Chicagoist was hoping that he might venture to show up on this week's episode. As Tim Gunn led the contestants onto a soundstage, we held out hope, but instead were treated to...Tiki Barber? Yes, the former NFL running back/Today Show correspondent was the challenge subject and guest...

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-Verse
This week ended with the launch of the seventh and final Harry Potter installation. But while the world was consumed with Pottermania, it's important to remember that there were more serious things going on in the world, too – two of them in -Ist cities. Sampaist was shocked when a passenger jet crashed into the center of Sao Paulo, killing at least 200 people. The airplane, an Airbus A320, skidded off the runway at the...
ESPN Owns Monday Night Football
ESPN saw its NFL ratings jump with their move from Sunday night football last year to the "Monday Night Football" slot this season. ESPN will look to keep up the momentum and offer football fans almost year-round "Monday Night Football" action. The Arena Football League and ESPN entered into a five-year agreement for television rights earlier this week. The course of the Arena Football League season runs from March, just a month after the Super Bowl, right up to the start of NFL training camp in July.
Reliving (and Reviewing) the Prom
Interactive shows are often like the political rallies of the theater world. The presentation is predictably high concept, improvisation is mostly warmed over talking points, and everyone’s expected to cheer on cue and leave feeling wonderful. Only later do you realize your candidate’s flawed, his policy papers need work, and there’s no way he’ll deliver on his promises.
Holiday Hours
Did anyone else catch Dennis DeYoung and Billy Corgan singing Christmas carols on WGN this morning? Wow. It was…a little awkward. While both are talented in their own right, they’re not exactly born to duet with each other as DeYoung’s vibrato drowned out the less robust vocal stylings of Corgan. But if two of the biggest egos in Chicago rock are able to peacefully coexist in the same studio then yes, Virginia, there is a...
