On this -- officially the slowest sports day of the year -- we will take the opportunity to look back at the first half (or so) of the season for the Cubs and Sox. Fans of both teams entered the season with high expectations. Has either team lived up to those expectations? Cubs After spending a ton of money on free agents during the off season, the Cubs sit in second place in the NL...

2006's baseball season brought disappointment to both sides of Chicago. Coming off their 2005 World Series title, the White Sox won 90 games but missed the playoffs — in spite of a number of roster upgrades during the offseason. Did Kenny Williams tinker too much with the chemistry that won them a title in '05? Last year's team never seemed to find its rhythm. On the North Side, the Cubs climbed ever closer to that...
Chicagoist is becoming increasingly concerned about Sox GM Kenny Williams and his mental state. Has he been overworked the past few years? Does he need a break? Is he trying to get himself fired? Does he covet some scouting job with the New York Mets? Otherwise, we're at a loss to explain his handling of the White Sox starting rotation since the end of last season. In early December, he traded Freddy Garcia, a workhorse...
The Cubs and White Sox have been getting in baseball shape down in Arizona for the past couple weeks, and for the most part it's been a pretty quiet Spring Training for both clubs. Other than Kerry Wood's hot tub incident, and Ozzie's recent war of words with former pitcher Brandon McCarthy, the spring has been pretty quiet. Really quiet, actually. Sunday, however, things got a little more raucous as the White Sox and Cubs...
From the sound of things, White Sox GM Kenny Williams has been a busy man recently. While the Sox have yet to make the splash during the off-season their North Side rivals have, media reports suggest the White Sox may be close to making a very big trade with the Los Angeles Angels.
Chicagoist long ago stopped fantasizing about our beloved teams landing each disgruntled superstar, whether via free agency or trade. We've been teased by Kobe and Garnett, Deion Branch and Carlos Beltran, too many times. And sure, sometimes we've landed the big names, but for every Ben Wallace or Jim Thome there have also been Albert Belle and Nomar Garciaparra.
Baseball’s non-waiver trading deadline passed today at 3:00pm (CDT). The Cubs and Sox were both rumored to be players in possible deals, with the Cubs likely sellers of players and the Sox looking to add those missing pieces to help them right their ship and hopefully make a return trip to the World Series. Since the Cubs fell out of the running, there had been rumors that Greg Maddux and Todd Walker would get shipped...
The White Sox open a 3-game series against the AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers tonight in Detroit. Some are considering this a do or die series, even though we're only in mid-July. Amazing how losing 5 of 6 brings out the doom and gloom in so many Sox fans. Especially when it includes a sweep by the Yanks. Fortunately, the local media are trying to talk Sox fans down off the ledge. It's not time to panic -- yet!
The Cubs and White Sox each won their season openers Monday. Of course, the Sox actually began their opener on Sunday. A 3-hour rain delay pushed the game into Monday morning, when the game ended around 1:00am.
Man, we hate it when, on rare occasions, we actually agree with Jay Mariotti. But he's right about the Cubs -- they're in big trouble this year. With the season starting in just a few days and their two supposed studs on the DL (what's this, the third straight year?) the Cubs don't look like legitimate playoff contenders. All spring, Cubs management continued to claim that there was nothing wrong with Kerry Wood and Mark...
"To the victor goes the spoils", indeed. Jon Garland avoided arbitration this offseason, signing a three-year, $29 million dollar contract with the White Sox yesterday. This year Garland had the breakout season that everyone expected of him when he was drafted by the Cubs then later traded to the Sox. Even though he had a subpar second half, Garland still finished with a record of 18-10 with a 3.50 ERA and a league-leading three...
Kenny Williams sure has been busy since the White Sox won the World Series. Had he simply brought back most of last year's roster, the Sox would have been a favorite to repeat. However, the taste of victory seems to have fueled an organizational urge to do everything possible ensure another trophy. Are the White Sox positioning themselves to do what the Bulls did in the 90's?
While our Bean Town siblings warned us about counting our eggs before they hatched, we spent the weekend grilling up some nice chicken dinners in the Chicagoist HQ as the White Sox beat the Red Sox 5-3 Friday afternoon, sweeping the American League Divisional Series. The Red Sox reign is over, only a season after snapping their 86-year curse. A new champion will be crowned. Could it be the White Sox, ending our own...
The White Sox have had surprisingly little drama involving his players throughout the season. In some part, that's what winning can do. Although even last year's champion Red Sox has to deal with Nomar Garciaparra's trade and Manny Ramirez's trade demands. But one issue that may be developing into a distraction for manager Ozzie Guillen involves relief pitcher Damaso Marte. Marte has pitched inconsistently of late, and many wondered if he was again hiding an...
Baseball's trading deadline is less than a week away, and neither Chicago team has made a big move yet. However, daily rumors surround the Sox and a number of high profile pitchers that are on the block. The two biggest names mentioned, in terms of starting pitchers, are A.J. Burnett and Jason Schmidt. While a deal sending Burnett to Baltimore looked like a done deal a few days ago, that deal has fallen apart and...
With all the computer-related headlines involving the Cubs, Chicagoist is surprised we don't see more comments from DLee or DustyB in our posts. The Cubs have asked Carlos Zambrano to cut down on his computer time, concerned that his 4 hours a day "emailing his family" might be contributing to his tennis elbow. Um... 4 hours emailing his family? Sounds more like maybe Carlos is spending a bit too much time downloading porn. Or reading...
Actually, two big breaks is more appropriate. The first big break is the one discovered in White Sox ace Mark Buehrle's foot. In a freak accident, Buehrle felt something pop while shagging fly balls in the outfield yesterday. An x-ray showed a hairline fracture and now Buehrle is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.
