Breaking news: An Amtrak train and a freight train collided at 48th and South Shields Ave about an hour ago, and passengers are being pulled out as we write this. Developing. UPDATE 12:27: Don Rashid from Stroger Hospital is on NBC5 saying that Stroger is in a "stage 3 disaster." Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse

All across the Ist-A-Verse (or at least the American parts thereof), writers and editors are in the midst of enjoying their three-day weekend. But after the week we've all had, we feel like the break is not only needed, but deserved. Just look at everything we've been doing! Gothamist headed into the Memorial Day weekend with a number of tasks accomplished. They worried about Long Islanders giving New Yorkers a bad name. They tried... more ›

Chicago Festival of Israeli Cinema: Telling You Before It's Too Late

Chicago Festival of Israeli Cinema: Telling You Before It's Too Late

Sometimes we at Chicagoist get busy with our day jobs and miss out on an opportunity to post breaking news. But when we come across a damn good event, we’ve gotta find a way to let you know about it, one way or another. more ›

Museums Aren't Attracting Diverse Crowds

Museums Aren't Attracting Diverse Crowds

A new study has found that Chicago’s museums attract crowds that are disproportionately white, educated and affluent. In other breaking news, there may be some corruption issues in city government, and the Cubs aren’t exactly the winningest team in baseball. more ›

Let Us Have A Moment Of Wankery, If You Will

Let Us Have A Moment Of Wankery, If You Will

We don’t care about the actual story. But after last week’s discussion of the mainstream media and their general lack of muckraking and what actually constitutes journalism, we’d like to do a little media masturbation and instead do a story on the stories.

One Of These Things Is Not Like The Other, Part 2

One Of These Things Is Not Like The Other, Part 2

We just had to chuckle this morning when we saw that Red Streak decided again tell the White Sox, "Who gives a shit? World Series? World Schmeries!" and bring us the breaking news that the FDA might approve a OTC DIY HIV test. Might? Yeh, that seems like something that shouuld take priority over the Sox. We realize that not everyone's into sports and last time we thought, "Well, maybe they're appealing to the people who aren't baseball fans," but come on! It's not every day that the hometown underdog for 88 years wins baseball's world title! And we'd like to think the story of their win transcends just sports. Also, how totally predictable are the three local headlines "Believe It"? If we have to listen to that Journey song one more time we're going Van Gogh on our ears. Seriously! more ›

Fields to Become Macy's in Fall 2006

Just noticed the Trib has a breaking news story - In the fall of next year, all Marshall Field's stores will convert to Macy's. This includes all 62 locations in Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Indiana, Ohio and SD. So.. Marshall Fields on State St. becomes Macy's on State. Federated, who bought the May chain that Marshall Field's is a part of, says that they respect the legacy and traditions of Field's and that... more ›

Notes From The Underground

Notes From The Underground

Independent film festivals are often a hit-and-miss affair. For every film that combines humor, insight, or drama with the visual excitement that is the medium of film, there are usually two or three works that sap your will to live just by watching them. Moreover, August is usually the month when major film studios start dumping the lesser lights in their summer release schedule. Oh save us, Chicago Underground Film Festival! This is CUFF’s 12th... more ›

Ageist Trib Retracts 'All Senior Citizens Look Alike' Statement

Ageist Trib Retracts 'All Senior Citizens Look Alike' Statement

We think it could be an interesting case, especially because it seems that it may be difficult for Calabrese to prove that the Trib published the photo maliciously, with reckless disregard for the truth, as the correction is now ALL OVER the news. more ›

Ebert Gets Starred

Ebert Gets Starred

We don't normally go to Bill Zwecker for breaking news, but we'll give credit where credit is due. Though the AP wires just picked it up this weekend (thanks to a press release from Disney), Zwecker reported back at the beginning of April about Sun-Times critic Roger Ebert receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Timed to coincide with the end of his Overlooked Film Festival wrapped up in Urbana, the announcement also... more ›
