Afternoon Box Score: Sox Go Extras to Beat Royals

Afternoon Box Score: Sox Go Extras to Beat Royals

We thought this game was going to continue into the night, but the White Sox scored three times in the their half of the 12th inning to defeat the Kansas City Royals 10-7. Carlos Quentin continued to swing a hot bat, with home run and three RBI. Ramon Castro also homered for the Sox. But the bullpen issues need to be addressed. Matt Thornton was spotted a one-run lead in the ninth and blew a save opportunity, and Will Ohman — pronounced "omen" as in, "this is a bad omen that Ohman is in the game" — also gave up an (unearned) run. Chris Sale picked up the win with two innings of relief work. The White Sox now return to U.S. Cellular Field for their home opener against Tampa. more ›

The Morning After: Sox Power Past Rangers

The Morning After: Sox Power Past Rangers

The Sox used the long ball to score all the runs they needed to edge the Rangers 4-3, avoiding a sweep in the series finale. Andruw Jones smacked a solo homer in the second to put the Sox up 1-0 but the Rangers would score three runs - one in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings - off of starter Freddy Garcia to take the 3-1 lead. An Alex Rios homer in the bottom of the sixth would cut the lead to 3-2, but it was Carlos Quentin who would play the hero. Quentin, who made an error in the fourth inning which led to the first Rangers run, belted a two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh to put the Sox up for good. Garcia went seven innings and earned the win while Matt Thornton held in the eighth and Bobby Jenks pitched a scoreless ninth for the save. Ozzie was happy with the pitching staff performance, saying, "I think if we take the lead and we've got the right guys out of the bullpen doing it ... six, seven innings for the White Sox starters [is great for us], because I know the bullpen is going to be pretty good if we do that." The Sox are now 23-30 on the year, 7.5 games back of division-leading Minnesota. The homestand at The Cell continues tonight when the Sox welcome the rival Cleveland Indians to town (7:10 p.m., CSN). more ›

Hardball Moves

Hardball Moves

It's the middle of winter but that doesn't mean our MLB teams are standing pat. Over the weekend, the White Sox announced that they had reached one-year deals with both Carlos Quentin ($3.2 million) and closer Bobby Jenks ($7.5 million). Meanwhile, the Cubs seem to have their eye on a pair of ex-Sox: pitcher Jose Contreras and outfielder Jermaine Dye. Injuries to Ted Lilly and Carlos Silva could leave the Cubs in need of a fifth starter for the first month-plus of the season, leading to the interest in Contreras. As for Dye, the Cubs would use him as a backup in both left and right field as well as possibly at first base. more ›

Sox Shuffle Lineup For Quentin's Return

Sox Shuffle Lineup For Quentin's Return

Carlos Quentin is back in the lineup for the White Sox. In fact, fans of the Pale Hose should be happy to hear he'll start in left field tonight against Tampa Bay, batting sixth in the lineup. Of course, someone has to be moved out to make room for Quentin, and that someone is Brian Anderson, who's been optioned to AAA Charlotte. Quentin's had a great rehab run in the minors, hitting .375 with four doubles, 1 HR and 10 RBIs in 14 games for the Charlotte and Kannapolis (A-level ball). [ESPN Chicago] more ›
