Election 2010: Thinning The Herd

Election 2010: Thinning The Herd

Monday was the deadline for candidates to drop from races - a la Danny Davis in the Cook County Board President's race - and to file challenges to petitions. WBEZ is on top of the latest developments with an updated candidate list as is Chicago Current. Perhaps the most noteworthy challenges come in the aforementioned Cook Co. race as both Dorothy Brown and incumbent Todd Stroger have had their petitions challenged. Brown's challenge is no surprise given the recent accusations of shenanigans but we're a little surprised to see Stroger challenged but given the heated nature of this campaign, maybe we shouldn't be. more ›

U.S. Supreme Court Takes Up Chicago Gun Ban Cases

A year after striking down Washington D.C.'s gun ban, the U.S. Supreme Court announced today they will hear challenges to Chicago's similar ban. The cases the SCOTUS will hear are National Rifle Association vs. City of Chicago and McDonald vs. City of Chicago. Red Eye Accepts The Ferris Challenge

Red Eye Accepts The Ferris Challenge

A while back, we pointed out how ESPN's Bill Simmons laid out a challenge to recreate Ferris Bueller's day of hooky. Chicago Magazine's Jeff Ruby tried it a year ago but couldn't quite do it all. It's an ambitious undertaking and - sorry, Ernest - we're a bit skeptical he can pull the whole thing off. That's not to say we're rooting against him. On the contrary, it would be a feat worthy of a round of beers on us to Ernest and his cohort. So good luck to you, Ernest; we're looking forward to how it goes. more ›

Making Macy's Wish: A Chicagoist Christmas Charity Challenge

If there's one thing we can be sure of, it's the high level of vitriol with which locals despise Macy's for forcing out Marshall Field's. But now we've come up with a plan that may allow you to get a little bit of revenge and help a charity in the process. Macy's is running a campaign this holiday season called Believe based on the New York Sun's famous 1897 editorial, "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus." Ha ha. Anyway. Each store is equipped with a "Believe Station" at which the young and young at heart can write a letter to Santa and drop it in the Santa Mail box. For every letter received, Macy's will donate $1 to Make-A-Wish, up to $1 million. So that got us thinking: how can we make sure Macy's has to shell out the full cool million and allows us to express our contempt for the store at the same time? Why, by stuffing the mailbox, of course! more ›
