Remember a few months back when the rumor spread that Rahm Emanuel, White House Chief of Staff, former U.S. Congressman of Illinois' Fifth District, and charades mastermind was mulling a run for Mayor of Chicago? And remember that kinda/sorta denial? Well, turns out the whole thing is true after all, albeit with a small caveat. Appearing on last night's Charlie Rose Show, Rahm told Rose, "I hope Mayor Daley seeks reelection. I will work and support him if he seeks reelection. But if Mayor Daley doesn't, one day I would like to run for mayor of the city of Chicago. That's always been an aspiration of mine even when I was in the House of Representatives." At this point, less than 10 months away from the next mayoral election, there's no reason to think Daley run for reelection. Rahm added, “Right now I'm a chief of staff. I'm in the Cabinet, [the] president put the chief of staff in the Cabinet, but one day I want to run again.” Mayor Daley hasn't responded to the interview but spokeswoman Jacqueline Heard said of Rahm's hopes and dreams, "That makes him one of many who aspire to the same goal. 2009 will not only bring us a new President (and hopefully a new governor), but a new speaking series at the Chicago Theatre and boy, does it look awesome. The series features an evening of conversation with the 'Stars of the Political World' at The Chicago Theatre, Radio City Music Hall in NYC and The Wang Theatre in Boston. The lineup is pretty strong and we can't take our eyes off that first one: Maher vs Coulter? It's like every Macho Man vs Hulk Hogan grudge match from our childhood amped up on amphetamines. If you see a rip in the space-time continuum somewhere around State & Lake that night, at least you'll know why. Our one caveat? No Soledad O'Brien. Man, we love her. more ›
