As promised, Chicagoist checked out the 2009 Chicago Auto Show over the weekend. And as suspected, the show was a smaller event than in recent years. While most auto makers still had their wares on the show floor -- Porsche was the noticeable exception -- the brands clearly scaled back their displays in both decor and in terms of the numbers of cars on the floor. This was especially evident for the larger brands, who used to feature a number of their most popular models for attendees to check out in all the various trim levels. In booth after booth this year, however, just one of each model beckoned people to check it out.
One of the "exclusives" at this weekend's Chicago Auto Show was Chevy's unveiling of the new set of cars that will be featured in the upcoming summer blockbuster Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen. Included are the new models of Bumblebee, Volt, and Sideswipe.
Times remain tough for the auto industry, with sales having fallen off a cliff due to a perfect storm of high gas prices, tight credit and the poor economy. But while we may be avoiding showrooms like the plague, we still want to check out the latest metal from Detroit and Munich -- especially if we can do so without packs of hungry salesmen nipping at our heels. While it's likely to be a less elaborate affair compared to years' past, the Chicago Auto Show must go on.
Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana Chevy dealerships are giving away free tickets to the Chicago Auto Show. All you have to do is fill out their online form, print the confirmation page, and visit a local dealership.
Yesterday we discussed Nissan's decision to withdraw from, among others, the Chicago Auto Show. Now it appears as if the complaints about their pull-out from local dealers have made enough noise that they're reconsidering. A spokesman says an announcement will be made next week and there is optimism. Chicago Automobile Trade Association spokesman Paul Brian said, "We're certainly optimistic, and it would be marvelous if they did. It would be a testimonial to a terrific group of dealers, who have worked very hard to make Nissan the No. 4-selling brand in Chicago."
Times are tough for auto makers. High gas prices and tight credit markets have conspired to keep people from buying new cars in recent months. The Big 3 have been reduced to begging for funds just to stay afloat, claiming if they go down so, too, will 3 million American jobs. GM even dropped Tiger Woods as a Buick spokesman to keep costs down.
There are few days of the year that Chicagoist look more forward to than our annual trip to the Chicago Auto Show. When we were a kid, we dreamed of the day we'd be able to drive any one of the shiny machines we admired so. Now that the Chicago Auto Show is well under way, we've had a few bright, shiny glimpses of what could be on its way for this car culture of ours. One of the most excitingly American innovations to debut is technology that could allow drivers to check email while on the road! Woohoo! We're sure it will take a few years for Chicago aldermen to notice it and ban it, so you've got some time...
Normally we are proud of the fact that we don't own a car, what with auto fatalities rising, global warming, and the always increasing dependence on oil. But, those things mean nothing when the wind is nipping at you like a thousand angry piranhas. So this weekend we are going to get re-acquainted with our four wheeled counterparts. After that we are going to reserve a car here, or here, and enjoy our weekend. As...

There's nothing better than getting somethin' for nothin'. Well, maybe driving with the top down while blaring music, but that won't happen for at least a couple more months. At the 2006 Chicago Auto Show this year there will be free concerts taking place at the Pontiac Garage. We missed last night's concert with the Bo Deans, but tonight on a first-come first-serve basis the Redwalls will play at 7 pm. Two more shows...
