How goes the bottled water tax? Not so great, actually. The city was counting on bringing in $10.5 million in nickels, but sales have been much slower than expected; at the current pace, only $4.8 million will be collected this year.

Ever wonder how to make beautiful sushi such as the pictured "Maxwell Street Roll" from Kohan, but you neither can get the rice to stick quite right or find the freshest fish around? The latter is simple: you can head to places like the Fish Guy Market (4423 N. Elston), L. Isaacson and Stein (800 W. Fulton), or Plitt Seafood Company (1455 W. Willow) for the best fish around.
Ah, dogs in costumes...has there ever been a more polarizing social oddity? You either love it or hate it, there's just no in between. If you're in the former camp, you a) probably have a dog, and b) probably don't have any other plans for this coming Saturday. Never fear - the Chicago Botanic Garden is here to save your weekend with the 5th Annual Reindog Parade. This is the only four hours all year when dogs are allowed in the Garden, but the price of admission is dressing your pooch up like a furry elf. Prizes for the best costume and refreshments for both the two- and four-legged attendees follow the parade.
Chicagoist was sick of seeing concrete this weekend, so we decided to take a trip to the Chicago Botanic Garden to enjoy the greenery and the sun. When we arrived we discovered that 1) the cicadas are indeed here, and 2) their Garden Chef Series was occurring, so we meandered over to the fruit and vegetable garden to see what was cooking.
When we were ages three to 12, the worst local field trip we were dragged on was to the Chicago Botanic Garden. For one thing, there are flowers in the backyard. For another, it's in, like, Glencoe. Also, the magic of anything we got our first glimpse of zooming along on the Edens is pretty much nonexistent. But we're older now, and things like free admission are less inherently lame, and more inherently awesome....
The major stories this week are the opening of Crust, the continuing saga of David Hammond, bug eater, and how — if Hammond decides to head to Beverly in the near future — he might have a Tippi Hedren moment fighting with the seagulls who've been dining al fresco on cicadas. There are still plenty of events happening in the next seven days. Here are a few of note. - This weekend would be a...

In an annual standard of living report, Chicago came in (tied with Washington DC) at 41st place. The study ranks the quality of life in the world's major cities. Zurich came in first, Baghdad last. The top US city is Honolulu. It's nice out and everyone's pulling out their bikes, but who needs a bike when you've got the LimoJet? The Bean is finally finished. Junk food in schools is still ok for now....
This weekend, April 15 - 17, the Chicago Botanic Garden is hosting its 6th Annual Antiques & Garden Fair. More than 100 exhibitors will be there from around the world and will be selling furnishing and garden antiques.
Bloomin' Terrific, the City's celebration of springtime, starts off it's season today at Daley Plaza. Every Thursday around lunchtime there are activities and a market from now until May 12. It's probably too late for you to attend today's event on creating herb containers but you can still stop by the market, which is open from 8 am - 2pm every Thursday to sell flowers and plants. So get offya butt, outta your cube for a while and attend one of the other weekly events:
Earlier in the week Chicagoist stopped by the Chicago Flower & Garden Show and one of the coolest things there was definately a display called All Aboard, Chicago. In it, miniature trains run past vignettes of 30 local landmarks including Wrigley Field, Trib Tower, the Sears Tower, and the Hancock Building. Pretty much everything in the display is made of natural materials. Like the train trestles that are made from willow twigs and the buildings made of twigs, bark, leaves, acorns, and pebbles.
On your mark, get set, go: starting Saturday, you’ve got exactly eight days to pretend it’s Spring with the 2005 Chicago Flower & Garden Show at Navy Pier. Yeah, it may not be the Spring you’ve been waiting for, but now’s not the time to get all fussy with the particulars—and if you’re anything like us, you’re total whores for a sure thing.
Memorial Day is a time to honor our vetrans, those who have died defending out country, and the men and women who are currently serving in the military. But let's face it - to many of us Memorial Day is a time to make merry because we have an extra day off of work! Whether you celebrate it patriotically or not, Chicago has a million things going on this weekend. Chicagoist tried to round them all up, but feel free to comment if we missed any!
