The Vintage Bazaar Returns!

The Vintage Bazaar Returns!

Thrifters, DIY-ers and upcyclers rejoice: the Vintage Bazaar is setting up shop again, this time for a one-day stint in Pilsen. The pop-up flea market, curated and run by Chicago design mavens, Katherine Raz and Libby Alexander, is little more than a year old, but has grown quickly in popularity: last year's summer bazaar at the Congress Theater in Logan Square saw more than 8,000 shoppers browsing vintage furniture, clothing and pretty much any and all neat-looking odds and ends. more ›

And to celebrate their year-long success, CHIRP Radio will host a handful of local music events later this month. more ›

Senate Still Dragging Its Feet On Low Power FM

Senate Still Dragging Its Feet On Low Power FM

Right around a year ago, we were pretty excited when the House passed the Local Community Radio Act, a bill that would open up the radio waves to many different low power radio stations like our good friends at CHIRP. The House bill and its Senate companion (S.592) enjoy plenty of bipartisan support, including John McCain, Hillary Clinton, President Obama and Ron Paul. In fact, it's been suggested that LPFM could help heal our partisan wounds, since support for the legislation brought the folks like the Christian Coalition, Free Press and Reason Magazine to the same table. more ›

Lincoln Hall's Nilsson, Feist Documentary Screenings Honor Former Three Penny Glory

Some of us here at Chicagoist (ahem, this Chicagoista), are old enough to remember the days before Lincoln Hall had concerts and music events back to when that space was host to those moving picture thingies called movies. We welcome the return of the original use of the space this Monday night when Lincoln Hall and CHIRP radio present, The Three Penny Was Here, featuring two music documentaries, "Look What the Light Did Now" and "Who Is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everybody Talking About Him)?" more ›

CHIRP Radio Launches Sunday At High Noon

The ongoing fight for the right to broadcast low power FM radio stations nationwide celebrated it's first victory last month with the passing of the Local Community Radio Act. While the vote in the Senate is still to to come, the barriers removed thus far have allowed for this Sunday's two year in the making launch of CHIRP Radio. more ›

Another Victory For Low Power Radio

Another Victory For Low Power Radio

Earlier this week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Local Community Radio Act, which will open the airwaves to potentially hundreds of new low power FM radio stations across the country. The new legislation sets to repeal constraints put on LPFM Radio by Congress in 2000. Any low power station was to follow the “third adjacent rule,” which stated that there must be three empty clicks of the radio dial between stations. If the act is passed into law, those empty airwaves will now be filled with any number of low power stations, which could be used by local community groups, non-profit organizations and religious groups. more ›

Chip In For CHIRP

Chip In For CHIRP

CHIRP -- The Chicago Radio Independent Project -- is just about ready to launch, but need a little help covering their streaming costs. Y'see CHIRP is the exact opposite of what we usually hear polluting Chicago's airwaves. We're sick of corporate behemoths shoving the same ol' same ol' playlist consisting of an insanely limited range of music down our collective gullet. And while we love us our WBEZ, more community voices talking about local issues is never a bad thing. more ›
