City Clerk Asks Aldermen To Review Permit Parking

City Clerk Miguel del Valle called for a broad review of Chicago's expanding permit parking program on Thursday, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Some Smart Chicago News: Parking Stickers Streamlined

Since the focus on parking in Chicago has been almost entirely aimed (and rightfully so) at the parking meter debacle and LAZ, a little bit of good news is always appreciated. Believe it or not, someone in City Hall is actually making it easier to take care of your parking stickers. If you require both a city sticker and a residential parking sticker, Miguel del Valle and the office of the City Clerk have rolled the two together. From the City Clerk's website:

Convicted criminal and ex-City Clerk Jim Laski, fresh off his incarceration, has published a book about taking the fall in the Hired Truck scandal--and he says Mayor Daley knows more than he's letting on. Wait, wait, wait, hold the presses: Mayor Daley is intimately involved with scandal and patronage, but he'll deny it? Noooo.

We cannot wait for tomorrow. Not just because it's the season premieres of The Office and Ugly Betty, but also because there's an even more important show debuting. On the internet. We write, of course, of City Council Meetings, which, starting tomorrow, will be streamed online. Clear your calendars; the meeting starts at 10 a.m. These meetings were supposed to be broadcast back in 2004, but aldermen are pretty pretty princesses. "Some aldermen complained that...

When City Clerk Miguel Del Valle was appointed by Daley, everybody made a huge friggin deal about how he wanted to stream City Council meetings live on the Internet. There was all sorts of ballyhoo about "forging ahead" and "shining a light" on city politics. Fancy dancy, underpantsy: Chicago's on the Information Superhighway! What we didn't know is that when he said he wanted Chicago on "the cutting edge of transparency," he really meant that...

If you had just arrived in Chicago yesterday, with no knowledge of the political history of this town for the last 100 years or so, you might think that the mayor here was some kind of forward-thinking good-government type. With the Tribune's headline announcing that the city had agreed to ban patronage, it would seem that Daley was taking corruption by the horns and stamping it out, once and for all. Not likely. In fact,...

Well, it's been quite a week, and it's only Wednesday! Let's jump into the Way Back Machine and have a look at some of the vitriol and invective that has plagued this fine city's political scene in the last three days: • The big news on Monday was that Barack Obama was going to run for president. Sort of. If you watch the clip, he didn't really commit to anything. Chicagoist thinks that he's playing...

Not much has been going on here on the local scene lately. Chicagoist has been hoping we could turn the page on the whole Foley thing, but it just won't go away. In fact, other than cheap shots and lost opportunities, the natives have been pretty quiet.

While Congress wallows in its own self-loathing, the City that Works keeps plugging along. Mayor Daley announced yesterday that Miguel Del Valle would be replacing convicted former City Clerk James Laski. Del Valle, an Illinois State Senator since the late 1980's, has served a mostly Latino district on the Northwest Side of the city. Altogether this is a smart move by Da Mare, as it puts him in good graces with independents in the city,...

Mayor Daley gave his annual State of the City address yesterday, and judging from his words, everything is just hunky dory.

After being indicted in the Hired Truck scandal and vowing to stay in office and fight the charges against him, City Clerk James Laski has resigned.

It’s been a while since we talked about City Clerk James Laski’s involvement in the Hired Truck scandal. We’re sorry about that, but we were too busy trying to learn keno to write an update. And what a waste of time that turned out to be. So what’s been going on with Laski? Well, he vowed to stay on as City Clerk after being charged with taking bribes from trucking companies and lying to...

The Hired Truck scandal isn't going away anytime soon. Today the Sun-Times reports that federal prosecutors have announced that they have secret audio recordings of City Clerk James Laski that incriminate him in the scheme:

City car stickers are a drag. You have to go to the DMV to get them, you have to pay a bunch of money for them, and if you don't have one, count on getting at least $200 of tickets to encourage you to get one. On the bright side, this year there's an actual competition to choose the art displayed on the sticker.

It looks like the folks at the Tribune really pulled out all the stops on today's story about the City cracking down on unlicensed dogs. "Salivating over the possibility of new revenue, City Hall officials will soon begin hounding dog owners to get licenses for their pets." Seriously, guys? How did you pass up a "get their paws on some revenue" joke? We're disappointed in you.
