College Student Helped Armed Robbers Target His Friends

Robinson Taylor, 21, a student at Columbia College Chicago, took the role of the inside man in a recent home invasion, letting armed robbers into an Old Town apartment, where they beat his friends with brass knuckles and a handgun, according to Cook County prosecutors via the Chicago Tribune. Taylor was spotted on the security video on early Friday morning, opening the outer door to let the men inside. After beating the victims, the men stole computer and stereo equipment, before fleeing. Taylor allegedly climbed out a third-story window after the victims confronted. Police arrested him at 3:30 a.m. on Friday. He was held on Saturday in lieu of $450,000 bail on three felony counts of home invasion with a gun. more ›

Zinesters Back In Action At Chicago Zine Fest

Zinesters Back In Action At Chicago Zine Fest

After the success of last year’s inaugural Chicago Zine Fest, the zinesters are back for another weekend of readings, exhibitions and karaoke. In case you were wondering, zines are those little hand-drawn, photocopied and folded up books about anything and everything. Before it was hip to use Kindle as a self-publishing platform, zinesters were self-publishing these little books. This weekend’s Zine Fest will give all those DIY self-publishers a chance to come out of their underground holes and unite! more ›

AEMMP Returns with Free Compilation and Show

It’s been nearly two years since AEMMP, the Columbia College Chicago record label, celebrated its relaunch with the release of its first sampler, Chompilation. Now in 2011, they’re returning with the follow-up, Chomp, Too, which sees its official release date today. Available as a free download on the label’s Bandcamp page, the compilation features songs by local acts that include students and alumni of Columbia. Unlike many compilations that focus on one genre, Chomp, Too is sort of all over the place, covering punk, psych, garage, hardcore, pop, experimental, and post-rock. more ›

The Word Made Flesh

The Word Made Flesh

At first glance the title of a new exhibit at Columbia College, Fear into Fire, for all its alliterative bounce, doesn’t quite seem to mesh with its subtitle: Reclaiming Black Male Identity Through the Art of Tattooing. In fact, it does—especially when you listen to Nicole Harrison, the exhibit’s 25-year-old curator, describe “fear” as representing the challenges black youth face and “fire” representing the strength it takes to overcome those challenges. The photographs in this collection explore the connection between the black male body and skin art as they work in tandem to shape culture, influence personal identity, and create lasting bonds within the community. Columbia College alumnus Harrison chats with Chicagoist about the exhibit and what it was like to curate her first show. more ›

Chicago Fashion Students Show Promise

             + 2 more

There were some home runs and major strikeouts at last Friday night’s Dress Code, showcasing Chicago fashion design students, but we give everyone an A for effort. Contrary to Thursday evening's safe, and somewhat dull, fashion, this emerging talent isn't afraid to break the mold. While we're not quite sure if covering your body with a sheet is the latest trend, and frankly, garage-chic just isn’t our style. But one thing’s for sure: originality dominated this runway. more ›
