Oh Deer: Hunting Accident Dings Trib Reporter

Add the Trib’s Barbara Brotman to the list of hundreds of Americans hurt in hunting accidents every year. No, she wasn’t shot and killed by food writer Monica Eng as the two culminated the Trib’s season of venison fascination with a deer hunting trip in Carroll County. But, Brotman did take quite a shot the first time she squeezed the trigger with Bambi in her sites sights: more ›

The Morning After: Blackhawks Shut Out Phoenix

The Morning After: Blackhawks Shut Out Phoenix

Just days after blowing a two-goal lead (twice!) in a shoot-out loss to the Phoenix Coyotes, the Blackhawks got revenge by shutting the Coyotes out 2-0 last night. It was a big win for the 'Hawks: they managed to snap Phoenix's nine-game winning streak and the win also put them alone on top of the Western Conference by one point over San Jose. Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa both scored goals in the first half of the second period and excellent goaltending by Antti Niemi (28 saves) secured the win. The 'Hawks now hit the road to Columbus for a match-up tomorrow evening (6 p.m., CSN+). more ›

The Morning After: Bulls Snap Skid

The Morning After: Bulls Snap Skid

Rejoice, Bulls fans. Not only did both Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah return to action last night, but the Bulls also managed to snap their 10-game losing streak, beating up on the Philadelphia 76ers 98-84. The Bulls took the lead just over 3 minutes into the game and never trailed after that on their way to their first victory since February 26. Rose started and led the team with 23 points while Noah saw limited time off the bench for seven points and four rebounds. The Bulls will see if they can start a new winning streak tomorrow night when they host Houston (7 p.m., WCIU). more ›

The 'Hawks snapped a three-game skid and earned their second shoot-out win of the year, beating the Coyotes 3-2 to start their lengthy road trip. Kris Versteeg and Patrick Sharp scored goals a minute apart at the end of the first period to put the Blackhawks up 2-0, but the Coyotes managed a goal in each of the remaining periods to force overtime. Nikolai Khabibulin made 36 saves in all, including two in the shootout, to help the 'Hawks hold on for the win; Sharp and Jonathan Toews scored in the shoot-out for Chicago. While it's a long road trip for the team, Sharp seemed optimistic about it, saying, "It's good for us to get out on the road. We like playing at the United Center, but it's good to be around each other quite a bit and build some chemistry." more ›

Showdown at the Mall: Coyote Vs. Poodle

Showdown at the Mall: Coyote Vs. Poodle

So those urban coyotes who’ve invaded Chicago? They weren’t so bad when they were just sniffing around the suburbs and hanging out at Lincoln Park Zoo. Even when they started eating geese, no one seemed to mind too much. It’s the circle of life, and goose poop is gross. But then they started attacking dogs. And now, indirectly, people. Oh it is on, coyotes. It is on. more ›

Just Say "No" to Urban Elephants

Just Say "No" to Urban Elephants

We live in the midwest - the big, flat boring midwest. Yet, somehow, amid the corn and the corn and the distinct lack of exotic foliage, we still have our fair share of wild animals sightings around these parts: Monkeys have invaded Elgin. Coyotes are terrorizing Glencoe's pet population. Fish have their own piece of Michigan Avenue real estate. But, according to a Joyce Poole, a top research scientist at a Kenyan national park, this... more ›

All The Best Surfers Have Funny Names

All The Best Surfers Have Funny Names

Chicagoist enjoyed the surfing movie Blue Crush as far as it went: great camera work, cute girls in bikinis, tolerable clichés. But lines like “You were working it like a rib without the sauce” didn’t exactly smack of reality. So we were kind of excited that Chicago Filmmakers (5243 N. Clark) was screening Heart of the Sea: Kapolioka’ehukai (although we were less than thrilled about the prospect of spelling it correctly for this post) as part of their Dyke Delicious series that starts this Saturday. more ›
