Architect Shares His Vision for Wrigley Field Online
Cubs Stay Put in Mesa
Perhaps Crane Kenney was green with envy after the White Sox moved into sparkling new Spring Training digs in Glendale, Arizona last winter. For the past year, the Cubs' president has been exploring options for new spring training facilities for the North Siders -- even toying with the idea of the Cubbies moving to Florida and the Grapefruit League after more than 50 years in Arizona. While wooed heavily by Naples, Florida, the Cubs have decided to stay put in Mesa after reaching an agreement with the city for a brand new $84-million facility.
Cubs/Victorino BeerGate Update
There are moves afoot in regards to last night's Wrigley Field outfield shenanigans. Cubs chairman Crane Kenney personally called Philadelphia outfielder Shane Victorino and apologized. Not only that, the Tribune is reporting that charges will be filed if/when the perp is caught. The matter is now with the Chicago Police who will charge the fan with assault - after the Cubs and Victorino filed a complaint - if the fan is caught. And, by all accounts, it looks like he will. Besides the above image, courtesy of Deadspin, the Trib's story features a detailed Getty Image of the fans involved that pretty clearly shows who was the thrower. You can also reference the video below which confirms what the pics already show.
Cubs Want More Night Games
Safely away from Chicago, Cubs Chairman Crane Kenney mentioned the team's desire to play a total of 50 night games, an increase over the current 30 allowed in an agreement between the club, the city and the local Wrigleyville residents. Speaking to the Marco Island (FL) Sunrise Rotary Club, Kenney explained, "Players like a routine," and that additional night games would relieve the players of playing day games after arriving from road trips in the early-morning hours. In 2009, the Cubs have just one game that falls into that category -- their home opener on April 12 following a night game in Milwaukee.
Cubs Sale Won't Happen Until After Opening Day
Despite the fact the Tribune Company has picked a buyer for the Chicago Cubs, it doesn't look like they'll be rid of the team by Opening Day as had been originally hoped. Cubs chairman Crane Kenney said talks to hammer out an official deal continue and that the negotiations will likely continue even as the Cubs' April 6th Opening Day comes and goes.
Cubs Getting Own Network?
It may be a ways off, but there are indications the Cubs could be getting their own TV network a la the Yankees' YES station. Cubs Chairman Crane Kenney hit on the topic during a radio interview this weekend, calling the potential station, "like the MLB Network, but with just the Cubs." The one hitch seems to be that the Tribune Company owns the rights to broadcast live Cubs games for about 10 more years, so the ability to show live games is still a ways off. But Kenney suggested that the network could fill its airtime rebroadcasting old games, documentaries, and other examples of archival footage. Kenney indicated the team is also working on an OnDemand package for local cable and satellite companies to provide to customers, possibly in place by Opening Day.
Cubs Plan Sale, Raise Some Ticket Prices
It's a busy time of year for the Cubs. While they still haven't made that rumored landing of ace Jake Peavy, they have received bids from three potential suitors interested in buying the team and now the organization says they plan to be sold by Spring Training which begins in mid-February. Cubs Chairman Crane Kenney said:
The bids that came in were for control of the team where for Sam, any interest would be a small interest. I think at some point people were talking about Sam holding almost half of it. That's not the way they [bid]...People are ready to come in, and while the economy is as challenging as it is, I think the value of the franchise really hasn't changed long-term. I think the bidders are all well financed and understand that. They didn't deviate much from where the value should be...more ›
