Hot Tub Time Machine, A Satisfying Soak

Hot Tub Time Machine, A Satisfying Soak

With a title and premise like Hot Tub Time Machine, you know what you're getting as soon as you walk in. There are no pretenses, no expectations, and the movie probably gets funnier with the more chemicals that are in your bloodstream. It's a buddy comedy fashioned after last year's blockbuster hit The Hangover. The movie follows three friends - Adam (John Cusack), Nick (Craig Robinson), and Lou (Rob Corddry) - each going through his own mid-life crisis and throws in Adam's nephew, Jacob (Clark Duke) as a young outsider for good measure. One of the characters' crisis inspires a weekend trip to a ski lodge, the scene of many of their favorite young adult memories and antics but now a run-down hole. The men make the best of the situation, have a wild night of drinking in a mysterious hot tub, and wake up to find themselves in 1986; the three older men in their 1986 bodies while Jacob remains himself. There's some talk of the space-time continuum using Terminator as a reference and the group decides to do their best to go through the motions of that specific night without doing something to completely throw off the timeline, a plan that goes out the window pretty quick. more ›

Music Box Enters the Movie Business

Music Box Enters the Movie Business

No, that headline is not redundant. One of our favorite movie theaters, the Music Box opened in 1929. By the 70’s however it had added porn to its schedule in order to stay afloat. It actually closed in 1977 but was reopened in 1983 after renovations. It’s been showing the best in foreign, revival and indie film ever since. Love that organ. In 2003 the theater was sold to the building’s owner, William Schopf.... more ›

Crispin Glover in Chicago, Pt. 2: "Brand Upon The Brain!"

Last year when we posted about Crispin Glover coming to Chicago with his film What Is It?, we had no idea it would trigger a rather heated discussion about the nature of art and of provocation's role in art. We were also surprised that, well, that many other people saw the film; after all, a film with a naked woman in a monkey mask jacking off a man with severe cerebral palsy isn't exactly aiming... more ›

Weekend Jaunts: Sunday Edition

Weekend Jaunts: Sunday Edition

Plenty to do on this lazy Sunday, and oh yes, this includes toys and circus cats. As always, feel free to add more events in the comments section. From 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. today the 2006 Chicago International Toy and Game Fair takes place at the Schaumburg Convention Center. There will be a giant 8-foot jenga, a moonwalk, other giant board games, and huge slides. We don't feel we offer enough kid friendly events... more ›

Tasty Crispin

Tasty Crispin

Most of us know Crispin Glover from the role which he will be forever associated with: that of Marty McFly’s dad in Back to the Future. (His most famous line of dialog, of course, “Get your damn hands off her!”) But aside from the dozens of quirky performances he’s given over the years (the Christmas-obsessed weirdo in Wild at Heart being our favorite), Mr. Glover is also an accomplished artist, writer, musician and filmmaker. He... more ›
