A Bastille Day Buffet

There have been so many Bastille Day events happening around town in the past few days you'd think the original thirteen colonies rebelled from France. Since there's a seeming load of Francophiles in town we've compiled a list of Bastille Day events and prix fixe menus for you to consider.

It's mid-July which means that many tastings and fixed price dinner events have a Bastille Day theme. Here are a few of note

  • Registration opened Tuesday for the Chicago Bicycle Federation's annual Veggie Bike and Dine, one of the federation's more popular events. For this year's version, scheduled for September 13, CBF has partnered with NeighborSpace to plan a two-wheeled tour of some of the most lush urban gardens in the city. The starts in Pilsen at Xochiquetzal Peace Garden, 1903 W. 23rd St., ending with an after-party at Michael Altenburg's Crust in Wicker Park. Space is limited and it always sells out. RSVP to (312) 427-3325, ext. 237 now.
  • Sweetbreads are one of the best misnomers in cuisine. Neither sweet nor a bread product, a sweetbread is either the pancreas (stomach sweetbread or noix in French) or thymus gland (throat sweetbread or gorge in French) of an animal, typically lamb or a calf. If that alone turned you off of sweetbreads, the lengthy preparation to remove any blood from the tissue, off-tasting fat and gristle won't exactly have your mouth watering. But their delicate flavor is a worthwhile culinary adventure to experience and Chicago restaurants offer many opportunities to do just that.
