Weekend Diversion

So apparently Lady Gaga has a new video out for her song "Telephone" and it features Beyonce, a women's prison straight off of a bad Skinemax movie with scantily clad women, product placement, and it's over 9 minutes long and it's weird. Whatever. As much as I love Beyonce, if want to watch two super-duper stars in an awful music video that will forever be burned into my corneas, I'll take Jagger and Bowie singing "Dancing in the Streets," thankyouverymuch. more ›

Friday Afternoon Diversion: Happy Birthday Mr. Jones

I am kind of a complete geek over David Bowie, so much so I DJed a Bowie Night earlier this week in celebration of his at the time impending birthday. Today is the actual big day though, and 63 years ago Bowie was born / landed on our planet / stepped through an inter-dimensional rift and has been entertaining / confounding folks ever since. The dude is so awesome there is NOTHING he cannot make cool. For proof of this, notice how he makes dancing with babies and puppets while sporting electroshock hair look totally AWESOME. more ›

Monday Afternoon Diversion: A Bowie/Crosby Christmas

We're willing to accept that it's already the Christmas season even though the calendar still says November (for a few more hours, anyway). We just prefer to do it right. That begins with this awesome duet by two music legends. more ›

Wax On, Wax Off

Wax On, Wax Off

Hold it before you assume that we mean the Doobie Brothers or CCR - Wax Fang has enjoyed comparisons to David Bowie’s sharp vocals and dreamy glam shimmer just as often. Self-described as “how rock ‘n’ roll might sound if it simultaneously existed in the past and future,” there’s no doubt that these guys are channeling the might and fury of first-wave ‘hard’ rockers through a filter of disjointed modern nerd rock…like they’re concurrently pilfering from both Journey and the Silver Jews. more ›

The CTT Show is For Paying Customers Only

The CTT Show is For Paying Customers Only

Now that Spidey 3 and Transformers have opened and iPhone mania is starting to subside, it’s time to find a new place to direct all that geek-out energy. Enter Chicago Tap Theatre’s latest storybook show, The Hourglass in the Stop-Time Chronicles, a CTT collaboration with comic-book artist Andrew Pepoy. Fans of the genre don’t need to be reminded that local boy and Loyola grad Pepoy has inked Spiderman, Superman, Batman, and The Simpsons comix, among... more ›

They're Tapping Into Something

They're Tapping Into Something

Tap dance is so hot right now. Any moment now we’re expecting a press release from the Department of Cultural Affairs announcing Chicago Tap Dance Month. When two tap shows are concurrently grabbing headlines and selling briskly, it’s the next logical, uh, step. At the Harris Theater, Imagine Tap!, incorporates jazz, hip hop, latin beats, spritual music, breakdancing, turntablism, and of course lots and lots of tap dancing led by a group of supremely accomplished... more ›

I Want My Tube TV

I Want My Tube TV

Last night Chicagoist took a break from our rock-n-roll lifestyle and turned on the television, mainly to watch Ultimate Fighting ‘cuz we have a slight case of the bloodlust, but came across a channel that we had never seen before on Comcast, Channel 197 (at least at our abode) – The Tube Music Network. more ›

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse

Londonist prepares a Happy Birthday bath for Buddah this week and then things get all cliched. A madman goes on a rampage while axe-weidling and London's mayor warns an American diplomat to avoid the kitchen if the heat bothers him so much. LAist has finally come around to purchasing tickets for Clipper Train. Hyper local dating sites are spamming L.A. neighborhoods and the fascinating Dame Darcy talks with LAist about art, the city and earthquakes.... more ›

Undead Undead Undead Undead!

Undead Undead Undead Undead!

Chicagoist remembers when The Sisters Of Mercy came through town in the early ‘90s and we were totally psyched. We weren’t exactly what you’d call Goth kids – we showed up to the show in shorts and a Keith Haring T-shirt since we reckoned it would get mighty warm in The Riv that night – and we weren’t exactly prepared for the massive amount of Goth kids in miles of lave and velvet that were... more ›

Music For The Tricked Out

Music For The Tricked Out

We’re still suffering from a White Sox hangover so the very thought of staying out all night to see live music has us feeling a little nauseous. But if you’re a Cubs fan or looking for some good live music with your Halloween festivities then there are plenty of options this weekend. We love a good cover song and the notion of bands masquerading as other bands is a natural for Halloween. Beat Kitchen hosts... more ›

Ho, Ho, How Much Christmas Can You Handle?
