Michel Gondry at the Apple Store Tuesday

Prepare yourselves for the first big indie nerdgasm of '08, coming up Tuesday: Michel Gondry (that's one) will be at the Apple Store (that's two) discussing his upcoming film (three), about video-store clerks (four) played by Jack Black and Mos Def (five), who accidentally erase but then remake the videos they rent out (aaaand new pants). more ›

Me, I Want A Hula Hoop

A classic's a classic (above). But just in case you were thinking about sitting through the latest CGI remake, here's a bad review review from local critics: more ›

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse

Texas is thawing, the Northeast is freezing, and a sort of natural order seems almost restored to the Ist-A-Verse. Almost. Londonist HQ—that is to say, the city of London—was battered by heavy winds, making it a bad time to be a twelve-meter (nearly forty-foot) tall snowman. Still, not everyone decided to keep warmly covered. Meanwhile, back indoors, the Big Brother racism is now causing all kinds of headaches for international diplomats, and Londonist got into... more ›

O Henry

O Henry

We here at the Chicagoist offices like to play the “who’s overrated?” game. We usually start off with a rousing “ANGELINA JOLIE!”; and then do a quick step to “Bill Gates!”; and then one final “Julia Roberts!” and we’re done. Tractor Pull and Chase

Tractor Pull and Chase

We're not huge fans of the "look and laugh at this dip-shit criminal" news stories. They're too easy or something. But we need to post quick before we start pre-partying for tonight's Chicagoist party and just couldn't pass this one up. more ›

Peel Back the Layers

Peel Back the Layers

Chicagoist knows it's not original to say this, but man, we can't get enough of The Onion. Though based currently in New York, the paper hails from Wisconsin and it definitely has that indefinable Midwestern sensibility and sense of humor that we know and love. We have all the books (the brilliant Our Dumb Century, Dispatches from the Tenth Circle), a few of the T-shirts ("Your favorite band sucks"), the coffee mug ("Fuck off"), and can recite classic headlines for days ("There's no 'My Kid has Cancer' in Team"). We went to their Christmas party last year, and if your humor paper can get performances by David Cross, The Walkmen, and Yo La Tengo at such an event, you must be doing something right. Hell, Chicagoist even knows one of the writers, and he's a damn nice guy. more ›

Emmy Nominations, Blow by Blow

Emmy Nominations, Blow by Blow

Emmy nominations came out today, and if only to prove how much TV we can watch, were going to weigh in on just about everything. Well do this again right before and probably right after the Emmys, too. So stay tuned. Unfortunately, one of our favorite shows wasn't eligible this time around, so we'll take a second to think fondly of "Six Feet Under. "Our favorites are in bold. Drama Series: "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,"... more ›
