The Leftovers In Your Fridge Are Holding An Art Opening Tonight

So are the fruit flies buzzing around the basket of tangelos and peaches on your kitchen counter, and your Aunt Kathy, and your Cousin Melvin, and your landlord. Even the Amalgamated Union of Lolcat-Artists, Local 12 — one of Chicago's most cutting-edge arts organizations — is throwing a group show (theme: "Kittehs H8 Scaree Glenn Beck"). Chicago Gallery News' comprehensive list of openings should help you find what's what and where, as should Newcity's list. but here are some highlights (i.e., emailing us about your upcoming events works!) to help you along:

Non-Pitchfork Artsy Things to Do

Why you wanna go and spend your weekend standing in some litter-covered park, staring at scrawny musician types for hours on end? Those rock and rollers don't care about you, honey -- they'll just take your money and then move on to the next town or festival, leaving you with nothing to show for it except grass stains, foggy concession stand memories and some iPhone/gPhone/SLRphone pics.

Richard Hunt at David Weinberg

Some of us are just happy to finish our bowl of soup without getting it all over our shirts. And others, like Richard Hunt, can boast of having their artwork displayed in public places across the U.S., and of winning honors such as the International Sculpture Center's Lifetime Achievement Award. Hunt's work includes Jacob's Ladder at the Carter G. Woodson Library and We Will by the Heritage Building downtown. Tonight, the David Weinberg Gallery in River North hosts an opening reception featuring Hunt's sculptural and lithographic works. This should be a don't miss.

Unfortunately, we don't know where this oasis exists, so we must find other, local alternatives while we search our Goode's Atlas in vain.

Hoo boy. We've got a lot of art openings going down in the West Loop on Friday, some calls for entries, and fun with cubes.
