The Blackhawks stopped a two-game skid with a 3-2 SO win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday. Carolina scored early in the first period to take a 1-0 lead, but Chicago answered with a goal from Kris Versteeg in the second and another from Troy Brouwer in the third to give the 'Hawks the upper hand. With the clock winding down to the final minute of play it appeared Chicago was in line for the victory, but Jonathan Toews got called for hooking and the 'Canes pulled goalie Cam Ward to give them a two-man advantage. The strategy paid off when Tuomo Ruutu tied the score with only 26.5 left in the game and sent this one to overtime. A scoreless overtime led to a shootout, where Versteeg went top shelf against Ward and netted the game winner. The 'Hawks welcomed the return of Nikolai Khabibulin to the roster, as they try to get back to full strength for their playoff push.

Congrats to DePaul University. After going 0-18 in their regular season Big East conference play, the Blue Demons pulled off a shocker today, as they upset Cincinnati in the first round of the Big East tournament, 67-57. DePaul was seeded 16th and will next face Providence tomorrow. We'll have more in tomorrow's Morning Box Score.

The top team in the East flexed its muscle on Saturday, as the Boston Bruins defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 5-3. Chicago got off to a sluggish start, attempting only seven shots in the first period. Boston, meanwhile, fired 15 attempts and scored the game's first goal 10 minutes in. The Hawks' Jonathan Toews banked one off defenseman Aaron Ward late in the second to even the score at one, but the Bruins countered with a barrage of goals over the next six minutes to claim a 4-1 advantage. Chicago fought back with third-period scores from Kris Versteeg and Patrick Kane, but their fate was sealed when Boston scored an empty-netter in the final minute of play. Recently acquired Mark Recchi was responsible for two Bruins goals, while the Blackhawks must wait to play with their new toy, center Samuel Pahlsson, as he recovers from a bout of mono.

Bulls Whip WarriorsThe Chicago predicta-Bulls earned another home victory on Wednesday, defeating the Golden State Warriors 110-88. This time Chicago fell behind early, surrendering 20 points in the first five and a half minutes, before propelling themselves into the lead with a 26-8 scoring run. Recently acquired John Salmons and Brad Miller led the scoring with 23 and 19, respectively, and Joakim Noah had a nice outing with 14 points, 17 boards and four blocked shots. Chicago has been thriving at home as of late, winning its last four contests at the UC by an average of 15 points. Conversely, the Bulls have lost their last four road games by the same average margin. The good news? The Bulls play 12 of their remaining 20 games at home, including Friday's matchup with Milwaukee.

The Chicago Bulls looked to be in line for their third consecutive double-digit loss Saturday night, but instead rallied to beat the Houston Rockets 105-102. Up three at the half, the Rockets steadily built their advantage to 17 by the end of the third quarter. The situation looked dire for the Bulls, having gained no ground by the midway point of the fourth, but Ben Gordon and Derrick Rose decided they weren't finished yet. Gordon started the run with a quick five points, and Rose added six more over the next two minutes. By the time they were done, the two Chicago guards had scored 22 of the game's final 26 points and earned the Bulls a blistering comeback victory. It was not all smiles for Chicago, though, as Luol Deng was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his right tibia and may miss the rest of the campaign.

Chicago managed to maintain a two-possession lead throughout the latter half of the third quarter, but turned ice cold at the start of the final period. The Blackhawks scored a 3-1 victory over the Stars on Saturday, completing a four-game, season sweep of the Dallas skaters. Patrick Kane poked in the game-winner seven and a half minutes into the second period, bookended by one-timers from defensemen James Wisniewski and Matt Walker as Chicago took a 3-0 lead. Cristobal Huet was once again stellar in net with 30 saves on 31 attempts, the spoiler coming on a breakaway goal midway through the third. The 'Hawks will return to a hero's welcome when they host the Minnesota Wild tonight, having amassed nine wins in their last 12 games, 11 of which were played on the road.

CTA Woes Continue

With a new transit doomsday prophecy, the area's transit systems are trying to figure out exactly how they'll manage to find the funding to stay running. At a CTA board meeting yesterday, chief financial officer Dennis Anosike revealed the alarming news that the CTA's budget deficit was at $87 million, much larger than had previously been thought. When added to the ginormous shortfall in tax revenue the RTA already outlined this week, the CTA now finds itself over $240 million in the red. Well, shit. And with everyone out of cash and looking for more, the infighting has begun as the CTA and RTA clashed over where the money would come from and who knew what when.

On a night of tributes to legendary coach and broadcaster Johnny “Red” Kerr, the Bulls gutsy, 107-102 comeback victory was the likely the best honor the Chicago native received. The Bulls trailed the Pistons by 15 with 7:30 to play, but whittled the deficit to 10 over the next four minutes. Then, an 11-2 run set the stage for Ben Gordon, whose heroic four-point play with 16 seconds left put Chicago in front for good. Gordon finished with 24, Derrick Rose had 23, Tyrus Thomas contributed 22 and 10 rebounds, and Joakim Noah had a strong showing with 12 points and 16 boards. The Bulls look to improve upon their recent 6-2 record when they face the Heat at home on Thursday.

Dirk Nowitzki powered the Dallas Mavericks past the Bulls in a 115-114 overtime victory. Three Bulls scored over 20 points: Gordon (28), Thomas (23), and Rose (22). But it wasn't enough as Nowitzki and the Mavs proved too much for Chicago. After a predominantly see-saw regulation, the Mavs jumped out to a four point lead in the extra period, then extended it to six and never looked back. The Bulls finally play at home again Tuesday versus the Pistons.

The Clippers only managed to match baskets in the fourth, as the Bulls cruised to victory. The win was Chicago’s first in six games, who hope to start a streak of a different kind when they square off against the Kings Friday night in Sacramento.

The Bulls suffered another close defeat Wednesday, losing 105-102 to the Hawks from Atlanta (no, the hockey team didn't pick up a basketball, although...). With the game tied at the start of the fourth quarter, the lead would see-saw seven times in the next seven minutes. The advange then tilted in Atlanta's favor, however, as Mike Bibby led a quick 7-0 surge for the Hawks. This pushed the lead to two-possessions, and put the game out of grasp for Chicago. Ben Gordon led the Bulls in scoring with 21, and Luol Deng was good for another double-double.

Early in the first half Northwestern flat-lined offensively, scoring only four points in an 11:30 stretch. Meanwhile, the Badgers built a double-digit lead that would only grow as the game went on. At the dawn of a five-game home stint, the Bulls got up on the wrong side of the bed, losing to the Minnesota Timberwolves 102-92. Trailing by seven, Chicago mustered eight straight points to start the fourth quarter and took their first lead since the opening period. The T'wolves battled back, however, and Ryan Gomes' three ball at the two-minute mark gave Minnesota enough elbow room to wrestle this one away. Derrick Rose outscored the rest with 22 points.

The Blackhawks' December to Remember continues as they notched their ninth straight victory last night by beating the Minnesota Wild 4-1. Dustin Byfuglien had a pair of first period goals and Martin Havlat and Kris Versteeg added to the tally. Huet looked sharp in goal for the 'Hawks, stopping 13 of 14 shots. Jonathan Toews explained the 'Hawks state of mind thusly: "We're kind of feeling like the Boston Celtics...There's just a sense of calmness. I think any other team would be excited to be in this situation, and sometimes when you have that momentum you get a little overexcited. We just need to keep our sticks on the ice and keep it simple. We don't overskate or overdo anything out there." The Blackhawks travel to Detroit for a game tomorrow night and then welcome the Red Wings to Wrigley on Thursday for the NHL's much-hyped Winter Classic.

The Flames made Chicago sweat a bit in this one, but the Blackhawks came away with the 3-2 overtime victory. Duncan Keith scored the game winner 23 seconds into the bonus period off a Jonathon Toews assist. Patrick Kane and Dave Bolland recorded the other two scores, while Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 32 shots on goal. The soaring 'Hawks remain unbeaten in the month of December..

The Bulls did their best Charlotte Bobcats impersonation on Wednesday, beating the Los Angeles Clippers 115-109 in overtime. In eerily similar circumstances to last night's contest, the Bulls' Ben Gordon drew a foul on a three-point attempt with 20 seconds left in regulation. Gordon's play was of the four-point variety, and tied the game to force an extra period. With the momentum in their favor this time around, the Bulls secured the W on two clutch jumpers from Luol Deng. Gordon and Andres Nocioni each scored 22 to help thwart a 30-point effort from the Clippers' Zach Randolph.

It was home sweet home for the Blackhawks last night as they made their return home from the annual Circus Trip and beat the Anaheim Ducks 4-2. The win also stopped a three-game losing streak. Patrick Sharp gave the 'Hawks in early lead, scoring on a power play goal late in the first but Anaheim answered with two goals of their own in the second to take a 2-1 lead. The young Blackhawks team then showed what they're capable of, ripping of three goals in the game's final six minutes to grab a victory. Havlat, Toews, and Bolland all notched goals and Kris Versteeg had two assists in the third. Huet played a solid game in net, stopping 30 of 32 shot. After the game, Versteeg said, “This is a huge win. It’s good to come out on top against a team like Anaheim; it shows our character.” Chicago remains two points up on Nashville for second place in the division and travel to Detroit to take on the rival, first-place Red Wings on Saturday.
