Isiah Thomas Interested in DePaul Job

DePaul's expressed a desire to hire a high profile name in the hopes of returning their men's basketball program to prominence after a prolonged period of poor play, but thus far is having a bit of trouble filling its coaching vacancy. However, Athletic Director Jean Lenti Ponsetto would be best to ignore any job application emails, screen all calls and generally avoid any contact with one well known name. NBA Hall of Famer and Chicago native Isiah Thomas has expressed interest in coaching the Blue Demons, according to a source close to the former Pistons star. more ›

Be DePaul's New Coach

Proving that posting jobs online isn't just for politics now, DePaul University has opened up its men's basketball head coach position to the general public. After struggling mightily the last few years, DePaul bid adieu to coach Jerry Wainwright earlier this season, replacing him with interim head coach Tracy Webster who, when he wasn't recruiting junior high players, was 1-15 in the position; the Blue Demons finished the season 8-23 overall, 1-17 in Big East play. Think you can do a better job against the likes of Georgetown, West Virginia, Pitt, Louisville, Notre Dame, Villanova, and UConn? Swing by the school's website and fill out the application. more ›

The Morning After: Bulls Lose Fifth Straight

The Morning After: Bulls Lose Fifth Straight

The Bulls, who seemed resurgent just a few weeks ago, are struggling to stay afloat in the Eastern Conference playoff picture as they fell to the Utah Jazz 132-108 last night, their fifth-straight loss. The game was competitive for the entire first half and into the second, but a 13-1 Jazz run in the third quarter gave them a double-digit lead and the Bulls were never able to get a second wind to catch Utah. Derrick Rose scored 25 points and dished 13 assists in the loss while Brad Miller scored 20. At one point nipping at the heels of fifth place in the conference, the Bulls now find themselves on the outside looking in. The Bulls will have a tough time ending the streak when they travel to Orland tomorrow (7 p.m., TNT). more ›

The Morning After: 'Hawks Crush Canucks

The Blackhawks put their foot on the gas in a relentless first period and cruised to a 6-3 victory over Vancouver in a physical game that saw plenty of shoving and swinging early. Andrew Ladd opened up the scoring less than four minutes into the game. Duncan Keith scored on a power play halfway through the first and was followed 30 seconds later by Troy Brouwer. The 'Hawks gave up a goal to Vancouver but then answered back as Kris Versteeg netted his 14th goal of the season and Jordan Hendry scored his first, giving the 'Hawks a 5-1 lead at the end of the first. The only other Blackhawks score would come from Marian Hossa late in the second. In net for the 'Hawks, Cristobal Huet made 20 saves, including going 7 for 7 on power plays. Meanwhile, the 'Hawks lit up gold meal winning goalie Roberto Luongo, scoring their first five goals on him and sending him packing in the second period. The win puts the 'Hawks in a first-place tie atop the Western Conference with San Jose; both teams have 91 points. Next up for the 'Hawks? The rival Red Wings come in for a nationally televised brunch-time match-up tomorrow (11:30 a.m., NBC). more ›

The Morning After: 'Hawks Return Spoiled

The Morning After: 'Hawks Return Spoiled

There may be four medal winners on the Blackhawks' roster, but there were no winners last night as the New York Islanders cruised to a 5-3 victory in the post-Olympics return to the ice for both teams. Brian Campbell opened the scoring to give the 'Hawks a 1-0 lead and Patrick Kane scored on a power-play to give them a 2-1 edge going into the first intermission. But that's where the 'Hawks' edge would end: the Isles scored four straight goals in the second period, enough to see Antti Niemi pulled in favor of Huet in goal. Dustin Byfuglien managed a late power-play goal in the third, but it was too little, too late. The 'Hawks hope their home return tonight against Edmonton will give them more of a bounce (7:30 p.m., CSN). more ›

The Bulls didn't have quite enough gas to get by the Pacers last night, falling 100-90 in Indianapolis. Derrick Rose had 27 points to lead the Bulls (31-28) while Luol Deng scored 13 points and pulled down 18 rebounds. DePaul Recruiting Eighth Grader

We thought things were getting a bit nuts with collegiate sports and recruiting when it was announced last week that a 13-year-old kid had already committed to play football at USC. Now it looks like DePaul is getting in on the Teen Recruiting action as interim head coach Tracy Webster has started recruiting 14-year-old Jahlil Okafor, a Rosemont Elementary School District 78 eighth grader (and distant cousin to the NBA's Emeka Okafor). The Morning After: Blackhawks, Bulls Both Fall

Just like the Bulls, the Blackhawks had their United Center homecoming spoiled by losing as the St. Louis Blues got the best of the 'Hawks 3-2. Patrick Kane got the 'Hawks off to a good start and a 1-0 lead with a backhand goal a little over seven minutes in to the game. But a bad second period sunk the 'Hawks as the Blues scored three straight goals in an eight minute span to take a 3-1 lead heading into the third period. Marian Hossa cut into the lead with a short-handed goal early in the third, but the 'Hawks weren't able to get any closer and the Blues held on for the win. The 'Hawks nearly doubled the Blues up on shots, 34-19, but the Blues made theirs count; Huet got the nod in goal with an ill Antti Niemi sitting out a scheduled start. The Phoenix Coyotes come skating into town Friday as the 'Hawks look to bounce back into the win column (7:30 p.m., CSN+). more ›

The Morning After: Blackhawks Fall To 'Canes, Illini Hold Off Hoosiers

The Blackhawks wrapped up their Disney-On-Ice road trip last night but found themselves having less success than their United Center counterparts as they fell to the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2. The 'Canes took the lead with a goal in the waning seconds of the first period and Chicago answered with a Marian Hossa goal a few minutes into the second. Carolina answered late in the second to take a 2-1 edge and the 'Hawks once again tied the game up as Andrew Ladd scored a few minutes in to the third period. But the 'Canes scored twice in a 26 second span at the midway point of the third to take a two-goal lead they wouldn't relinquish. Huet got 20 saves but allowed all four goals while the 'Hawks out-shot the 'Canes 41-24 but still wound up with the loss. The 'Hawks still lead the division comfortably and are in second place in the Western Conference, just 3 points behind San Jose. The team also gets 4 of the next 6 games at home before the two-week Olympic break. Next up is a return to the UC to face St. Louis on Wednesday (7:30 p.m., CSN). more ›

The 'Hawks skated into Detroit Sunday morning and skated out with their third-straight win in a 4-3 shootout victory. The 'Hawks got off to a fast start, opening up a 2-0 lead in the first period thanks to a Troy Brouwer goal and a Patrick Kane power play goal. Detroit answered with a goal before the first intermission to cut the lead to 2-1 and continued into the second by tying the game 2-2. Patrick Sharp gave the 'Hawks the lead again midway through the second period but Detroit eventually evened up the game at 3-3 midway through the third. Regulation ended at 3-3 and the overtime flew by at a furious pace with the score remaining at 3-3. In the shootout, Toews and Hossa both scored for the 'Hawks and Sharp put away the game-winner. The game also featured a rare stat for this year's 'Hawks: they were actually outshot by their opponent. Not long after his goal in the first, the 'Hawks lost Kane for the night. John Salmons again paced the Bulls with 22 points and Derrick Rose added 19. As for Gordon, he played well for Detroit, scoring 18 points off the bench. Said Salmons after the victory, "We've had some games that we could have won, should have won, could have won. Now we have to take advantage of all these upcoming home games."
