The first storm of the winter season has passed. Here’s how it came down, by the numbers: About 400 flights canceled at O’Hare and Midway; those not canceled delayed 40 to 60 minutes. Wind gusts up to 45 m.p.h. Up to a quarter-inch of ice in some places. One death reported in Wisconsin, in a weather-related traffic accident. 100,000 customers without power across northern Illinois, mostly in the west and northwest suburbs. About 15,000 are...

Chicagoist remembers writing nearly the same post about a year ago — sadly it looks like once again the Cubs will open the season without Kerry Wood. The oft-injured pitcher landed on the disabled list on Monday, meaning that once again he will not break camp with the Cubs. Wood begins the season where he ended last year, with a torn rotator cuff. Opting against surgery, Wood hoped off-season rehab, losing 30 pounds and making...

With Mark Prior scheduled to make his next Spring Training appearance at the Cubs minor league camp, Chicago media are piling on the "he's done" bandwagon. The Sun-Times' Chris de Luca adds Prior to the list of top draft picks who, in spite of incredible talent and notoriaty, never panned out -- Todd Van Poppel, Brien Taylor and Shawn Abner. We certainly remember the inflated prices for those guys' "future star" baseball cards back in...

Chicagoist is always going on and on about stupid people, and sometimes we forget how stupid animals can be. Like deer, for instance. Some of them don’t even know the difference between a feed bag and a jack-o-lantern. Seriously, they’re that dumb. And that’s not even the worst of it.

Chicagoist likes to think we’ve seen it all, but, sometimes, we’re still a little shocked, or at least puzzled, by our fellow humans. Which, we suppose, isn’t a bad thing. Good to keep things interesting.

Of course by now you know all about how the Brits foiled a terrorist plot to blow up airplanes flying to America with liquid explosives. The news caused absolute chaos at airports yesterday as passengers had to dispose of all liquids, gels, creams, and lotions, and subject themselves to more intense searches. Add to that the simultaneous freakout that occurs at the mere mention of terrorism near an airport these days, and you have an absolute nightmare for air travelers.

Seventeen years ago there was a Bush in the White House, demonstrations for democracy in Tiananmen Square, an oil liner spewing its contents around Alaska’s waters, and the album of the year was George Michael’s Faith. Under these auspicious circumstances a band came into the world. That band was the New Duncan Imperials.

Thing just aren't going right for the Cubs lately. Looking like a playoff contender heading into the Cubs-Sox series, the Cubs remain winless in July and have fallen 4 games under .500. Hoping to shake things up, the Cubs sent both Corey Patterson and Jason Dubois down to the minors, where they'll join the AAA Iowa Cubs. Don't worry guys, they've even got an Olive Garden in Des Moines now!

Hey, you! Yeah, you in the band. We know you’re usually pretty tired from having to be your own roadie and all but Chicagoist wanted to remind you that you’ve got until tomorrow to enter Metromix’s Rock ‘n’ Vote contest. Judges will pick their ten favorites from all entries received then Metromix readers will vote for their top four to play a concert at Metro. What might the future hold for the winners? How about...
