Morning Box Score: Bears Slip Past Lions

You'd think that three-quarters of the way through the season, we'd finally have a grasp on this Bears team. But no sooner had they convinced the last of the doubters they're for real, they needed the benefit of another controversial call in order to slip past the lowly Detroit Lions 24-20 on Sunday. more ›

Thanksgiving Football: Tradition In Need of Update

Thanksgiving Football: Tradition In Need of Update

Almost as much a part of the Thanksgiving holiday as turkey, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie, football has traditionally acted as the great entertainer for men while the women slaved away on the feast. While this holiday division of labor has changed some over the past couple decades, the tradition of the NFL on TV on Turkey Day remains even as John Madden and his six-legged turkducken have permanently parked the Madden Cruiser. more ›

Morning Box Score: Bears Find Way To Beat Lions 19-14

The 2010 Chicago Bears are awful, and Lovie Smith needs to be fired. There is no other way to deal with the debacle we saw at Soldier Field on Sunday. No matter that the Bears managed a 19-14 win when Jay Cutler connected with Matt Forte for a 28-yard touchdown inside of two minutes and a Calvin Johnson touchdown for the Lions was controversially waved off in the final 30 seconds. If there is such thing as a moral victories, this was the definition of moral defeat. The Bears played at home against a Detroit Lions team who had lost 20 straight road games. A Lions team that had won two games in the past two seasons. A team that lost their starting QB to injury just before halftime. And yet the Bears needed a miracle finish to win the game. more ›

Marinelli Interviews With Bears

Marinelli Interviews With Bears

After a 9-7 season and no trip to the playoffs, the Chicago Bears are certainly looking to improve. But can hiring the former head coach from the first NFL team to ever go 0-16 possibly help? Rod Marinelli, fired by Detroit after their debacle of a season, was seen at Halas Hall over the weekend where he apparently interviewed for a job with the Bears. more ›

Bears Head Into Bye Week 3-5

Bears Head Into Bye Week 3-5

Had they won on Sunday, and entered their bye week with a 4-4 record, maybe things could work out and the Bears would still make the playoffs. But those of us who endured the Bears' 16-7 loss to the Detroit Lions know that the post-season is not in the cards this year. Where to even begin with what went wrong? How about the offense? Cedric Benson continues to reinforce the perception that he's a bust... more ›

Run or Shoot?

Run or Shoot?

Sure, we're all anxious and upset about the supposed cuts to the CTA service. However, there is one bus route we wouldn't mind see being cut. "We're a team that gets off the bus running the football,'' Bears coach Lovie Smith said Wednesday. ''I have it memorized, and that's what we are, period.'' Has he been watching the same offense we we've been watching this year? The only thing separating this team from a 1-6... more ›

New QB, Same Results

New QB, Same Results

Things are not looking very good for the Bears. With Sunday's 37-27 loss to the Detroit Lions, the Bears showed their weaknesses on both sides of the ball. The first game of the Brian Griese era was no more successful than the Bears under Rex Grossman. Supposedly the safe game manager, Griese threw three interceptions — two while the Bears were in the "red zone." The other one was returned 64 yards for a touchdown.... more ›

Bears Pick Apart Packers

Bears Pick Apart Packers

Well, that sure looked easy! Opening up at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, the Bears made it perfectly clear who controls the NFC North this year, shutting out the Packers 26-0. This was the first time in Brett Favre's career that the Packers had been held scoreless. The Bears put together a complete effort, winning this game because of their offense, defense and special teams. Rex Grossman looked like a real QB, compiling a 98.6... more ›

Bears Season Preview

Bears Season Preview

The Bears open their 2006 season on Sunday against the Packers up in Green Bay. What a way to kick the season off! While the Bears look to figure into the playoff picture, the Packers are focusing on the Brett Favre farewell (maybe) tour. The Bears should open with a key road victory against a division opponent, but in these big rivalries, one never knows. So just how good are the Bears this year? That's... more ›

Where Are They Now?

Where Are They Now?

Quite a few formerly high profile Chicago sports figures have sudeenly found themselves in new locations, or rumors abound that they might soon land elsewhere. Wednesday saw Frank Thomas offically sign with the Oakland A's, agreeing to a 1-year, $500,000 deal that could earn him up to $2.6 million with performance bonuses. Chicagoist hopes to see Thomas put up some productive numbers for the A's, athough it'll be wierd to see him in gold and... more ›

Loud and Clear Statement

Loud and Clear Statement

The Bears came into this weekend with a surprising 6-3 record, which placed them atop the NFC North. But the division and the Bears schedule in general was pretty weak through the first 9 games of the seaon. The Bears wins came against the likes of the New Orleans Saints, San Francisco 49ers and the Detroit Lions. Lots of questions remained about how the team would fare when opposing one of the league's top teams. more ›

Bears Alone in First

Bears Alone in First

The Bears and Detroit Lions faced off yesterday in Detroit with first place in the NFC North at stake. While they couldn't finish the job in regulation, the Bears eventually beat the Lions -- winning 19-13 when Peanut Tillman ran an interception back for a TD in overtime. After Tillman picked off Lion QB Jeff Garcia, safety Mike Brown pointed him towards the end zone. Just in case he didn't know where it was,... more ›

Bears Win Defensive Battle

Bears Win Defensive Battle

In a game that featured two of the NFL's top defenses and two offenses relying on backup QBs, the Bears beat the Baltimore Ravens 10-6 at Soldier Field. The Bears marched 78 yards down the field and scored a TD at the end of the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead. The rest of the game's scoring was limited to 3 field goals -- two by the Ravens in the 2nd quarter and one... more ›

Bears Beat Lions 38-6

Bears Beat Lions 38-6

Something told Chicagoist that the Bears had the potential to be a pretty good football team this season, and Sunday's game was about what we'd imagined a good Bears team might look like. Scoring in just about every possible way, the Bears beat the Detroit Lions 38-6. The 38 points were the largest offensive output by the Bears since 1993. The game was truly a team effort as the offense capitalized on turnovers caused by... more ›

Courting QB's

Courting QB's

Having given up on Jonathan Quinn and Jeff George, the Bears begin their auditions for a backup quarterback today with Kurt Warner's visit to Halas Hall. The former leage and Super Bowl MVP spent last season with the New York Giants, where he lost the starting job to rookie Eli Manning mid-season. Warner explained the other day, in Arizona: You always want to sign as a starter. I still believe I can be a starter... more ›

Bears Lose Opener

Bears Lose Opener

Chicagoist was in Vegas this weekend, so the Bears doubly hurt us yesterday. Not only did our team lose to the Detroit Lions 20-16, but in doing so failed to cover the 2.5 point spread and cost us the $20 we put down in the sports book. Who'd have thought Detroit would choose this week to win a their first road game since the 2000 season? more ›
