With a final score well suited for the venue, the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 6-4 in Thursday's Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic 2009. The Blackhawks, like the '08 Cubs so often did, jumped out to an early lead. Kris Versteeg put the first run on the board, and Martin Havlat's one timer sent the 'Hawks back in front after Detroit's Mikael Samuelsson tied the score at one apiece. In the final minute of the first period, Ben Eager lured Wing's goaltender Ty Conklin to his right from behind the net, then craftily switched directions and dumped a wrap-around into the left-hand void, making it 3-1 'Hawks. Despite Chicago's furious start, it was all Wings from then on.

We're all getting over our excitement for the upcoming NHL Winter Classic on New Years Day. Blackhawks versus Red Wings at Wrigley? Hell yes, we say. But some of us are teeny bit more excited than others. For example, Cook County Commissioner Mike Quigley. Quigley put together a resolution declaring January 1, 2009 as "Chicago Blackhawks Day" and designating Wrigleyville as an "Octopus-Free Zone." But our favorite part of the resolution? The clever Quigley tossed in a slam on the rival Red Wings by using red capital letters in the last line of the resolution that, when written out together, spell "DETROIT SUCKS." Buuuuurrrrrrn! Your move, Detroit.

On the other hand, it is a surprise that after a quarter of the season, the Blackhawks aren't breaking their fans' hearts. The Hawks have skated...

They've yet to find a way to sound the horn on power plays--hell, they've have had trouble scoring at all, with just four goals in three games, none while having the man advantage. No surprise though as the Hawks have been the worst in the NHL on...
