NFL Rules Change Hurts Hester, Bears

NFL Rules Change Hurts Hester, Bears

While the NFL team owners continue to lock out the players, the league carries on with off-season business. Among the items on the agenda are rules changes to reduce the rate of injuries — especially head injuries like concussions. With that goal in mind, the NFL passed new kick-off rules on Tuesday which could impact the Bears by curtailing what many view as the most exciting play in football. more ›

Four Bears Named to Pro Bowl; Vikings Give Bears First-Round Playoff Bye

Holiday gifts are still coming the Bears way, courtesy of their division rivals in Minnesota. The Vikings upset Philadelphia 24-14 last night, guaranteeing the Bears the second seed in the NFC and a first-round playoff bye. The Bears still have a chance at the top seed in the conference, but they're going to have to rely on losses Sunday to Atlanta and New Orleans. The defensing champion Saints face a tough challenge against Tampa Bay, but the Falcons match up against doormat Carolina. more ›

Morning Box Score: Bears Win Shootout Against Jets

It was supposed to be a matchup of two of the better defenses in the National Football League. Instead, the Bears and New York Jets combined for 72 points yesterday. Thankfully for Bears fans, Jay Cutler came up big when the team needed him most. more ›

Morning Box Score: Hester, Bears Run Past Vikings

One of the keys to this unlikely of Bears seasons has been the re-emergence of Devin Hester as a return threat. It's no coincidence that Hester's return to form kickoff and punt returns has coincided with the emergence of Earl Bennett and Johnny Knox at wide receiver, and teaming Hester with Danieal Manning on kickoff returns has given the bears a "pick your poison" decision for opposing kickers. more ›

Morning Box Score: Bears Put Away Packers

There is one undefeated team in the NFC after three weeks, and that lone perfect squad is the Bears after they overcame the Green Bay Packers 20-17 on Monday Night Football. In a tightly played back and forth game, the Bears relied on a couple of big plays to come away victorious in spite of Green Bay's dominance controlling the ball and racking up yards. Robbie Gould missed a field goal on the Bears' first possession, and the Packers took advantage of the resulting field position to claim an early 7-0 lead. The Bears' next turn with the Ball ended after Jay Cutler threw an interception in the red zone, not a good start for the home team. A Green Bay field goal put the Packers up 10-0 early in the second quarter. But a touchdown drive, set up by a 31 yard pass to Johnny Knox, was capped by a TD pass to Greg Olsen that cut the Packers' lead to 10-7 at halftime. more ›

Morning Box Score: Bears Beat Cowboys

After watching the Bears' first possession in Sunday's game, it looked like they were going to get killed... and quarterback Jay Cutler might literally lose his life (or least a few limbs) the way the Dallas defense kept drilling him into the turf. But Mike Martz adjusted his offensive schemes and the Bears ended up beating the Cowboys 27-20 in Dallas to open the season 2-0. more ›

The Morning After: Pair Of Bears Honored As Knox Makes Pro Bowl Debut

The Morning After: Pair Of Bears Honored As Knox Makes Pro Bowl Debut

Last night's NFL Pro Bowl was an experiment of sorts, being the first time in 30 years the game had been held outside of Hawaii and the first time it was held the weekend before the Super Bowl. The game also boasted its highest attendance in 50 years - over 70,000 - even though rain and cool temps chased away many fans by the second half of the AFC's 41-34 win. It also marked the Pro Bowl debut for the Bears' rookie wide receiver Johnny Knox. Knox was officially listed on the roster as a kick returner, filling in for one of the many originally slated starters (almost 40 percent) who bowed out of the league's all-star game. While he didn't have any catches despite being thrown to twice, Knox had a solid appearance as a kick returner, returning four kicks for 103 yards, including a 30 yard return. Not a bad debut at all. more ›

Morning Box Score: Bears Best Seahawks

For the second time in as many weeks, the Bears came from behind in the fourth quarter to win, this time knocking off the Seattle Seahawks 25-19 on the road. In the first half, things didn't look so good for the Bears when they fell behind 13-0. Jay Cutler threw an interception, Robbie Gould missed a field goal attempt and penalties hurt the team. They couldn't take advantage of a team without a number of its top players, including starting QB Matt Hasselbeck. Momentum in the game shifted, however, just before the half when Matt Forte's fumble at the two yard line was challenged and overturned. The Bears scored a TD and cut the Seattle's lead to six at the break. more ›

Morning Box Score: It’s F'n Goulden

On the game's very first play, the Bears jumped out to a 7-0 lead on an 83-yard kickoff return by Danieal Manning. On the final play of the game, Robbie Gould kicked the game-winning field goal in overtime to seal the deal on a 27-24 victory over the visiting New Orleans Saints. In between, the Bears almost gave away the game. more ›

Morning Box Score: Bears Slaughter Rams

Morning Box Score: Bears Slaughter Rams

Coming off last week's ugly loss in Green Bay, the Bears were looking for an opportunity to move forward in their quest to outlast their rivals and win the NFC North. Working in the Bears favor more than anything, perhaps, is their remaining schedule -- starting with Sunday's match-up against the St. Louis Rams. The Bears took care of business and headed north of .500 with a definitive 27-3 victory. more ›

Morning Box Score: Titanic Edition

Morning Box Score: Titanic Edition

The Bears suffered the loss of Kyle Orton at perhaps the worst possible time in their season. Rex Grossman had to take the reigns of the Bears offense for the first time in 2008 against the undefeated Tennessee Titans. That scenario didn't sound promising, and the end result was as expected -- the Bears dropped to 5-4 with their 21-14 loss at Soldier Field Sunday afternoon. more ›

Bears Clip Eagles' Wings

Bears Clip Eagles' Wings

If only the Bears could play all their games in prime time. Just like in week 1, the Bears took the field in front of a national audience against a supposedly superior team and left the field victorious 60 minutes later. For a while, though, like in each of the past two games, it looked like the Bears might surrender their lead late in the game. On this Sunday night, however, the Bears held off the Philadelphia Eagles 24-20. more ›

Bears Show Hester the Money

After first choosing to hold out of training camp while demanding a new deal, and then reversing course and showing up without a raise, Bears kick return specialist Devin Hester was rewarded with a fat new contract on Sunday. The 4-year deal guarantees him $15 million and could be worth as much as $40 million with incentives. more ›

Hester Holding Out

Hester Holding Out

When most of the Bears hit the practice field for the first time on Wednesday, one player was very noticeably absent. Kick return extraordinaire Devin Hester was nowhere to be found in Bourbonnais. He's decided to hold out of training camp until he gets a new contract. He's entering the third season of a four-year deal he signed after being drafted in '06. more ›

Four Bears to Pro Bowl

Four Bears to Pro Bowl

Too bad Brian Urlacher's monster game on Monday night came too late in the season for it to impact Pro Bowl voting by coaches and players. While he won the fans' vote, the Bears' middle linebacker was not selected to February's Pro Bowl for only the second time in his career — and the first in which he played the whole year. more ›

Giants End Bears' Playoff Hopes

Giants End Bears' Playoff Hopes

Well that should just about do it for any talk of the Bears making the playoffs. After leading for the first 53 minutes of the game, the Bears allowed the New York Giants to score two late touchdowns, resulting in 21-16 loss. The game began with a promising drive in which Rex Grossman drove the Bears down the field with ease, resulting in a touchdown and 7-0 lead just minutes into the game. But that... more ›

Bears Buck Broncos

Bears Buck Broncos

Chicagoist almost turned off the TV when the Denver Broncos scored to go up 34-20 on the Bears on Sunday, and we're willing to bet a fair share of the Bears fans at Soldier Field fled the cold rain about then as well. Fortunately, we decided to stick it out and saw a most improbable win, as the Bears scored two late touchdowns to tie the game and Robbie Gould kicked a field goal in... more ›

Bears Pluck Win From Eagles

Bears Pluck Win From Eagles

This time, their late comeback attempt worked. For the second week, the Bears drove down the field in the final two minutes to score a critical touchdown. But unlike last week's loss to the Vikings, the Bears put the final points on the board and held on to beat the Philadelphia Eagles 19-16. For the first three quarters, neither team had any success getting the ball into the end zone. Repeated trips into the "red... more ›

Vikings Run Over Bears

Vikings Run Over Bears

If you watched Sunday's Bears-Vikings game, you know — without a doubt — who the two most exciting players in the NFL are. The Bears have one of the guys on their roster, but the Vikings have the other, and he led Minnesota to a 34-31 victory. Devin Hester started the scoring by returning a punt 89 yards for a touchdown — his third return TD of the season. Hester also scored the Bears' final... more ›
