The Morning After: Cubs, Sox Both Win Again

The Morning After: Cubs, Sox Both Win Again

Don't look now, but the Cubs have won two in a row after beating Arizona 6-4 last night, another game of good offensive output. Leading the charge was Aramis Ramirez who returned from a stint on the bench due to a sore thumb. Ramirez belted a pair of homers, driving in four of the Cubs' runs. Kosuke Fukudome also added a solo homer. Carlos Silva snapped out of his slump and got his ninth win, his first win in a month, allowing just two runs over six innings. Sean Marshall gave up a pair of runs in the eighth forcing Carlos Marmol to throw almost two innings for the save, but the closer did the job without too much drama. The Cubs face off against the D-backs one more time tonight, hoping they can continue the offensive show in the desert (8:40 p.m., WGN). more ›

Morning Box Score: Cubs, Sox Wrap Up '09 Season

No matter which team you prefer, you're either sad to see baseball go or glad the long, torturous 2009 season is done. Benjy will wrap up the season for both teams (and look ahead to 2010) later in the week, but for now, here's what went down yesterday. more ›

Afternoon Box Score: Cubs Blank D-Backs

A day after being shellacked by the Arizona Diamonbacks, the Cubs bounced back behind a sterling performance from rookie Randy Wells and shoutout the D-backs 5-0 earlier this afternoon. Wells struck out 10 while allowing only three hits over seven innings or work. Reed Johnson hit a two-run triple in the fourth and Geovany Soto doubled in Johnson to give the Cubs a 3-0 lead; Soto would add another RBI in the sixth. The two teams do it one more time, closing out the regular season tomorrow afternoon at 1:20 p.m. (CSN). more ›

Wait Until Next Owners

Wait Until Next Owners

Well, that didn't take long, did it? The Arizona Diamondbacks finished off the Cubs 5-1 on Saturday, sweeping the NLDS ... and delaying a Cubs World Series at least another year. Those of us familiar with the Cubs knew what to expect from Game Three as a soon as Rich Hill's very first pitch to Chris Young ended up in the left-field bleachers. Hill was lucky to escape the inning down only 2-0, and he... more ›

Cubs Down 0-2

Cubs Down 0-2

Does Starbucks have anything larger than a venti? We're sure that many across Chicago are wondering the same thing if they stayed up to watch the entire Cubs-Diamondbacks game last night. Between the 9:07 p.m. first pitch and a 3-hour, 44-minute game, one was hard pressed to brush their teeth and make it to bed before 1:00 a.m. — enough time for a few hours of shuteye before getting up to trudge into the office. more ›

D'backs Bite Cubs

D'backs Bite Cubs

In Game One of the NLDS, the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Cubs 3-1, taking a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series. The big question is whether Cubs skipper Lou Piniella pulled Carlos Zambrano too soon. The Cubs ace was dealing, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out eight. The Diamondbacks' Brandon Webb matched Zambrano pitch for pitch, resulting in a 1-1 tie after the sixth. Yet Piniella pulled Z after six innings... more ›

Fans Head to Daley Plaza, Cubs Head to Arizona

Fans Head to Daley Plaza, Cubs Head to Arizona

Chicago won't be waiting until the Cubs win the World Series to celebrate. Given the Cubs' postseason track record over the past 99 seasons, that's probably a smart idea. A rally to celebrate the Cubs making the playoffs will be held at noon on Monday in Daley Plaza. While Cubs fans celebrate downtown, the Cubs themselves will head to Arizona. While baseball's regular season concluded on Sunday, the wild card won't be determined until a... more ›

Cubs Clinch Central

Cubs Clinch Central

The Cubs have clinched the NL Central crown -- and with two games to spare! Following a three game sweep at the hands of the Florida Marlins, things were looking sketchy, but the Brewers kept on losing, too. When the Cubs returned to the win column in Cincinnati on Friday night, and Milwaukee lost yet again, the final two games were subtracted from the magic number and the Cubs earned a berth in the postseason... more ›

Cubs for Sale

Cubs for Sale

After months of speculation that the Cubs might be put up for sale as part of a restructuring or sale of Tribune Co., almost immediately after the board's approval of Chicago billionaire Sam Zell's offer, news came that the team would in fact be sold. Now the handicapping can begin on who the new owner will be. There has certainly been no shortage of potential bidders mentioned. Of course, that was before the Cubs went... more ›

Female Ump Calls the Shots at Cubs Game

Female Ump Calls the Shots at Cubs Game

There's a misconception as old as time that says women aren't as interested in sports as men. While we of the fairer species of Chicagoist may not get into the heated discussions that the brawnier side does - nor can we rely on it as a conversation tactic when meeting a new fellow female - we do have room in our vast, vast brains (and hearts) for sports. Our personal favorite is America's pastime, baseball.... more ›

Sox Extend Vasquez's Contract

Sox Extend Vasquez's Contract

Chicagoist is becoming increasingly concerned about Sox GM Kenny Williams and his mental state. Has he been overworked the past few years? Does he need a break? Is he trying to get himself fired? Does he covet some scouting job with the New York Mets? Otherwise, we're at a loss to explain his handling of the White Sox starting rotation since the end of last season. In early December, he traded Freddy Garcia, a workhorse... more ›

Sox Pull off Another Trade. More Deals to Follow?

Kenny Williams sure has been busy since the White Sox won the World Series. Had he simply brought back most of last year's roster, the Sox would have been a favorite to repeat. However, the taste of victory seems to have fueled an organizational urge to do everything possible ensure another trophy. Are the White Sox positioning themselves to do what the Bulls did in the 90's? more ›
