2008 CTA Budget: "Doomsday" Was An Understatement
Ron Huberman et al handed down the proposed 2008 CTA budget, and it ain't pretty. At all.
Extra, Extra
The Illinois State Senate narrowly passed a public-works bill, which includes plans for a Chicago casino. The bill also gives the CTA $200 million in the form of a one-year loan to tide us over until the next crisis. Now on to the House, where this bill will totally die.
Totin' at the Tower
Before you continue reading, we want you to raise your right arm, take your index finger, place it on the top of your head and begin to scratch. A woman visiting Chicago from Tennessee was arrested yesterday morning after attempting to visit the Skydeck of the Sears Tower with a loaded gun in her purse. When passing through the metal detector, it was discovered the she was packing a .38-caliber revolver. She was taken into...
Zipcar (and Al Gore) Want Your Crappy Car
You know that extra car you have lying around? The one that only half works, requires lots of maintenance and doesn't get driven that often? Yeah, us neither (we rely on the lovely services of the CTA). But if we did, we would be pumped about an event that Zipcar is having next Monday, Feb. 26, at the Music Box Theatre called "Drive-In, Don't Drive Out." Drivers who bring in their old Pintos, Yugos and...
Who Is It?
Earlier this week we told you not to miss Mojica tonight at Cobra. What we didn't tell you, because we actually didn't know at the time, is that Mojica is opening for a very special surprise mystery guest.
The Power of Air Conditioning Compels You
Folks, it’s going to be hot out there this weekend. If you’re out and about, drink water. Take breaks. Wear loose-fitting natural fabrics for God’s sake. You do not want to end up having to check yourself into the hospital, what with some people going out of their way to give “heat exhaustion” a bad name. Much of Chicagoist will be braving the elements out at Union Park this weekend, but the siren call of...
AFSCME Abandons Blago
On Saturday AFSCME, the largest union of state employees, decided to back gubernatorial candidate Judy Baar Topinka in the Republican primary. They made no endorsement in the Democratic primary.
Blago Gets No Love
When Rod Blagojevich became governor of Illinois in 2002, he vowed to restore dignity to the office, be the anti-George Ryan, and end “business as usual” in Springfield. Technically, he did accomplish this because he runs the government out of Chicago instead of the state capitol.
Hollywood Politics
Unlike chocolate and peanut butter, politics and art are rarely two great tastes that taste great together. Witness Robert Mapplethorpe’s troubles with the NEA, the painting of former Chicago mayor Harold Washington in women’s underwear and this weekend’s Team America: World Police which is at the top of Chicagoist’s must-see list this weekend. Social commentary with puppets from the makers of South Park? Yes! And yet this only proves the above thesis as none other...
