We're embarrassed that this slipped by our radar, but on May 30th (the night we were celebrating our fifth birthday!) the Windy City Rollers had their last bout before June's Ivy King Cup Championship. How did things shake out? In a heated thriller, defending champs Hell's Belles fell to the Manic Attackers 123-112. The Manic Attackers, who were winless last year and 3-14 overall heading into this season, finished tied atop the league standings with the Belles, each team at 4-2. In the second bout, it was the previously winless Fury team playing spoiler by beating the Double Crossers 93-87 and keeping the Double Crossers out of contention for the Championship bout. (Be sure to check out the complete recap of the bout here).

Folding chairs were flying and fans were screaming last Saturday at the Windy City Rollers' fifth bout of the home season at UIC Pavilion. In match one, jammer Peg Legs of the Double Crossers (in black) was out for blood, darting around the pack with ease. But she was still no match for Hell’s Belles (in red) powerhouse blocker Megan Formor and stealth jammers Athena DeCrime and Varla Vendetta. HB led at the halfway 42-26. In the end, Hell’s Belles coasted to the win 140-60, showing why they’re first place in the league.
Who said the only March Madness had to be played on the hardwood? The ladies of the Windy City Rollers proved the action was just as chaotic on the derby track with a pair of great match-ups in their third bout of the season. In the first match, the Double Crossers (in black), led by jammers like Peg Legs and Riley Coyote, jumped to a 45-28 lead at the halfway point over The Fury (white). The Fury, 0-for-'09, found themselves way back but made a dramatic late run with 23 points on the last jam. It wasn't quite enough, however, as the Double Crossers moved to 2-1 on the season with the 98-81 win.
Chicagoist's Kate Gardiner attended the Windy City Rollers' second bout of the season this past Friday at the UIC Pavilion. As usual, there were expectations for some hard-hitting, fast-paced action and the ladies of the Windy City Rollers didn't disappoint. The Manic Attackers showed that their January win - their first victory in two years - wasn't a fluke in a 197-53 drubbing of The Fury. Meanwhile, the Double-Crossers bounced backed from their season-opening loss to upset defending champs Hell's Belles 120-116. Above are Kate's pics from the bout and we'll have a report from Kate later in the week. And if you're wondering, the next exciting bout will be Saturday, March 21 at 6:00 p.m. at the UIC Pavilion.
This weekend might not have been as cold as previous ones and we're sure part of that was due to the opening of the 2009 season for the Windy City Rollers. A very healthy crowd of several thousand cheered the Rollers on at their new home, the UIC Pavilion, a nice upgrade and one that we definitely prefer to the old location in Cicero for a myriad of reasons. Things got, er, rolling quickly in the first bout as The Manic Attackers, led by Beth Amphetamine, stormed away from The Double Crossers, 120-51. Not only were the Manic Attackers featuring new unis, the victory was their first in over two years (since 2006). The second bout was just as intense as The Fury took on defending champs Hell's Belles. The Belles took an early lead and The Fury did their best to close the gap early in the second half, but the Belles, thanks to some great play from Athena DeCrime and rookie Deb Autry, continued their unbeaten streak and pulled away with a 122-80 victory. The next bout is Friday, February 20 at 7:00 p.m. at the UIC Pavilion.
That last hour on Fridays always seems to take forever. At least there's plenty of cool stuff cooking this weekend:
