Sunday Liquor Sale Curbs Are Falling By The Wayside
Last month, Downers Grove joined a nationwide trend when they passed a measure allowing Sunday liquor sales to begin at 9 a.m. instead of noon--a change that local restaurants and hotels wanted to cash in on Bears games. Since 2002, 14 other states have dropped their liquor-related Blue Laws and allowed Sunday sales of alcohol, bringing the total number of states to 36, says Lisa Hawkins of the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States. "Blue Laws simply don't make sense in today's economy. They inconvenience consumers and deprive states of much-needed tax revenue," she said to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Cop Charged In Plot To Rob Drug Dealers
Randy J. Caudill, 34, a Downers Grove police officer, who was charged with official misconduct, also allegedly schemed with another man of a way to improperly run license plate numbers to identify suspected drug dealers, and then steal money from them, DuPage County authorities said on Friday. Caudill was charged on Thursday for the crimes and is currently in jail on a $200,000 bail.
The Strange Saga Of ChicagoSportsWebio Continues
It's been a strange couple of days for ChicagoSportsWebio and it all culminated with the site shutting down yesterday, according to the Trib's Phil Rosenthal. While the site still looks like it's fully operational, indeed, there is no audio. The drama started when Mike North's complaints about bounced checks got him fired from the site by co-founder David Hernandez. Hernandez was then alleged to have been running a Ponzi scheme and subsequently disappeared, his wife yesterday filing a missing person's report.
Adopt Arthur!
Uno the Beagle day was earlier this week. Well, today's Arthur the Beagle Day (more like afternoon, but potayto, potahto). What's Arthur got that Uno doesn't? He can be yours! You can adopt him or another pooch on Saturday at the Petsmart in Downers Grove.
Weekend Chicagoist Blotter
Here's what our local ne'erdowells have been up to while waiting in eager anticipation for tonight's Oscars:
Chicagoist Weekend Blotter
As we nurse a post-club bodyache, we offer you this weekend's crime rundown:
This Week in Stupid
It’s been a tough week for Dennis Hastert, and Chicagoist wants to do our part to help him out. That’s why we’re dedicating this installment of This Week in Stupid to the Speaker. Hopefully these tales of stupid from his home state will help him find a way out of this mess. Or not.
The Occifers Coming to Get You in Naperfille
Naperville leads the state in nailing drunk drivers!
This Week in Stupid
A sense of entitlement abounds this week, as Chicagoland residents defended their rights to pee on the floor at weddings, to expect courtesy from the mailman, to board airplanes without a ticket, to teach neighbors a lesson by planting drugs on their teenage sons, and to smoke crack in the comfort of their own cars: Last Saturday, two men attacked an off-duty police officer who was working security at a wedding after he confronted one...
Loyola Shells Out Big Cash For Heart Transplant Snafu
Can someone explain to Chicagoist how it is that a doctor needs to be told that before shipping off someone's organ to be placed in the body of another person for use - as opposed for giggles - he or she needs to EXAMINE IT FIRST? Isn't that sort of, oh, a given?
Sara Lee Gets Married, Has Kids, Moves to the Suburbs
That's the natural progression, right? But not with this Sara Lee. This Sara Lee has steamy sex scandals then bolts outta town.
Songs of Wild Colonial Boys
Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you know that today is St. Patrick’s Day. Yes, Chicago has a large Irish population and its history is dominated by the contributions of one particular Irish family. But like all other cities in the U.S., today is the day when anyone who’s worn a green shirt while eating a potato and watching a Colin Farrell movie will lay claim to a little “Irish” heritage.
Tragedy at Toys for Tots Parade
What started out as a day of charity and fun ended up in tragedy when a DuPage Country Sherriff's deputy, Frank Griseto, was killed. Police say a car driven by Arcirio Rodriguez struck Griseto's motorcycle during the Toys for Tots charity parade.
Sam's Wines Heading West
Sam's Wines & Spirits -- quite possibly Chicagoist's favorite store with its 35,000-square-feet of intoxicating goodness -- is expanding into the suburbs with a new store in west suburban Downers Grove.
World Pizza Eating Championship
Chicago is a sports town and Chicago is a pizza town, so it's only natural that it plays host to the Bacci World Pizza Eating Championship this Saturday at Bacci Pizzeria in Little Italy.
