Dozens of Dead Waterfowl Raise Questions
Thursday Afternoon Diversion: The Windy City
Across the Midwest people are dealing with bad weather - rain, wind, flooding. But it's not just people that are suffering in this weather. Animals are affected, too, as seen in this video of baby ducks.
The Morning After: Blackhawks, Bulls Bruised
It was a bruising night for the Blackhawks as, for the second time in a week, they lost a player to a hard - and shady - hit and then lost the game, falling to the Anaheim Ducks 4-2. The Ducks struck first just over four minutes in but Brent Seabrook answered for the 'Hawks to tie the game at 1-1. Early in the second, Seabrook got knocked out of the game when former Blackhawk James Wisniewski hit Seabrook high and hard, a retaliation for a hard hit Seabrook had just put on the Ducks' Corey Perry. The Ducks took a 2-1 lead on a short-handed goal in the second only to have Marian Hossa answer early in the third to tie the game. But the Ducks caught a break when an awful no-call on what should have been interference - as Corey checked Brent Sopol from behind while a deflected puck hung in the air - led to the Ducks' go-ahead goal. The Ducks would rub salt in the wound with an empty net goal in the final minute of the game. Corey Crawford saw his first action of the season in goal, giving up three goals and making 32 saves in the losing effort. The Blackhawks will try to recollect themselves in time to face the Kings tonight (9:30 p.m., CSN).
Morning Box Score
The Blackhawks finally lost a guy and, of course, it had to be in the land of Disney. The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim shut-out the Blackhawks 3-0 yesterday afternoon, handing the 'Hawks their first loss of the Circus Trip. It had been three weeks since the 'Hawks had last been on the losing end of a game. The Ducks scored on three consecutive power plays and managed to shut down a high-powered Blackhawks attack that had scored 20 goals over the previous four games, including a pair of seven goal games. All three Duck goals came in an 11 minute span from the end of the first period into the halfway point of the second period. Huet still managed 31 saves in goal, but the 'Hawks managed 28 shots of their own, none finding the back of the net. If there's a silver lining, it's that the 'Hawks wrap up the Circus Trip tonight in L.A. against the Kings (9:30 p.m., WGN). And you'll have plenty of chances in December to catch the 'Hawks: eight of the next 10 games after tonight are at home.
Morning Box Score
It was home sweet home for the Blackhawks last night as they made their return home from the annual Circus Trip and beat the Anaheim Ducks 4-2. The win also stopped a three-game losing streak. Patrick Sharp gave the 'Hawks in early lead, scoring on a power play goal late in the first but Anaheim answered with two goals of their own in the second to take a 2-1 lead. The young Blackhawks team then showed what they're capable of, ripping of three goals in the game's final six minutes to grab a victory. Havlat, Toews, and Bolland all notched goals and Kris Versteeg had two assists in the third. Huet played a solid game in net, stopping 30 of 32 shot. After the game, Versteeg said, “This is a huge win. It’s good to come out on top against a team like Anaheim; it shows our character.” Chicago remains two points up on Nashville for second place in the division and travel to Detroit to take on the rival, first-place Red Wings on Saturday.
Morning Box Score
After a good start to their Circus Trip, the Blackhawks have now dropped two straight as they fell to the Anaheim Ducks 1-0 yesterday. It was the first time all season that the Blackhaws have been held scoreless. Huet was able to stop 20 of 21 shots, allowing only a Ryan Getzlaf goal in the second period, but Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller stopped all 26 Chicago shots, including 15 in the second period. Rockford's Corey Crawford has been called up to back-up Huet as Khabibulin remains day-to-day after getting hurt in the game against San Jose earlier this week. The 'Hawks play tonight in L.A. and then they head home.
Blackhawks Look for Success at Home
The Chicago Blackhawks suffered only their second back-to back loss of the season on Wednesday and the first one in over a month. Something Blackhawks fans are not used to. The Blackhawks' 3-2 loss to the Canucks came in the first of a four-game home stand that continues tonight versus the Anaheim Ducks. Eight of the next ten Blackhawks games are at home, which is good news. They could use some home-ice advantage to help...
Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse
Sampaist is on the scene in São Paulo beginning this week to become the only ist south of the Equator. Editor Leandro M. Pinto leads the paulistanos down there. You can protest someone at his office, sure, but when the whistle blows at the end of the day can you follow him home? D.C. has sports fans, apparently, and elephants aren't really cut out for zoos. There's this trick where you can read information from...
Duck Breast Parmesan
Chicagoist recently found ourselves in possession of over three pounds of wild duck meat. We'd never dealt with cooking duck before, and we weren't even sure if we liked it. And so it lingered in its vacuum-sealed plastic, in our freezer, calling out "eat me, eat me" any time we opened the door ... the sound was awful, we stopped eating ice cream because of the ducks' insistence on being consumed. But after an afternoon of research, research, and more research, we gained confidence and clarity. We decided to try making Duck Breast Parmesan a recipe found at the Ducks Unlimited web site.
More of the Same at Navy Pier. Great.
They’re giving Navy Pier a makeover. Cripes. It’s like the makeover for Paula Jones: we guess it couldn’t hurt, but it doesn’t really help, does it?
Blackhawks Return to Ice After Year Off
The Blackhawks join the rest of the NHL in their return to the ice tonight after losing the entire 2004-2005 season to labor strife. In the opener, the Blackhawks face the Anaheim Mighty Ducks at the United Center. A lot has changed, both for the NHL and the Blackhawks. The Hawks have a new GM in Dale Tallon, a new coach in Trent Yawney and many new faces on the roster. Their biggest signing was...
