2006 Baseball Preview

2006 Baseball Preview

What a difference a year makes! Last year, as we embarked on a new baseball season, we discussed the eternal optimism of Chicago baseball fans in light of decades of futility. But in 2005 something most unexpected and most wonderful happened. Chicago won a World Series! And it wasn't even the Chicago team that many thought had a shot at the title. While the Cubs entered the season picked by many to reach the postseason,... more ›

Prior, Wood Start Season on DL

Prior, Wood Start Season on DL

Man, we hate it when, on rare occasions, we actually agree with Jay Mariotti. But he's right about the Cubs -- they're in big trouble this year. With the season starting in just a few days and their two supposed studs on the DL (what's this, the third straight year?) the Cubs don't look like legitimate playoff contenders. All spring, Cubs management continued to claim that there was nothing wrong with Kerry Wood and Mark... more ›

Marathon Men

Marathon Men

The Astros jumped out to a 4-0 lead on Jon Garland before the White Sox finally figured out Roy Oswalt in the 5th inning. Joe Crede lead off with a home run and by the time the inning ended, the Sox sent 11 guys to the plate and took a 5-4 lead. The score remained that way until Jason Lane doubled off Dustin Hermanson in the 8th to tie the game 5-5. The score remained tied at 5 for 6 innings, despite both teams having a number of opportunities to score. Astros left countless men on base -- it seemed like every inning they had two on with zero or one out. But the bullpen held them inning after inning. Finally, "scrub" Geoff Blum hit a home run to right field to break the tie. A couple of infield hits and a couple of walks added another run. Damaso Matre started the 14th for the Sox, and when two runners reached base Ozzie Guillen brought in Mark Buehrle to record the final out and seal the victory for the White Sox. more ›

The Sox will send Jose Contreras to the mound against The Angels' Paul Byrd. more ›

As the Trading Deadline Approaches...

Baseball's non-waiver trading deadline is less than two weeks away, and teams are starting to make some moves to either bolster their rosters for a playoff run or shipping out expensive and/or expiring contracts. more ›

Vote Fraud on All Chicago Team?

Vote Fraud on All Chicago Team?

The Trib named its All-City team leading up the first meeting between the White Sox and Cubs this year. As the second crosstown series approaches, the Trib is allowing its readers to pick their team. Chicagoist is a little skeptical of the result thus far, however. We make no excuses for our allegiance to the South Siders and the Sox do sport the best record in baseball, but we still think the fan selected All-City... more ›

All-Chicago Team

All-Chicago Team

It's the eve of the first meeting between the Cubs and the White Sox in 2005. For the players, it's an off day. But their fans are beginning to get riled up across the city. Debates, and probably fist fights, have fans of both teams disagreeing on the merits of their team vs. the other team. While the Sox are clearly the better team, reason played little part in these debates. And sometimes reason is... more ›
