2010 has been a mixed year for Chicago restaurants. Despite some notable openings, the recession continues to take its toll as restaurants have fewer dining dollars to compete for. Iin his review of Eivissa from June, Anthony praised the Old Town tapas hotspot's service and reasonable prices, especially the cocktails. He also had reservations about Dudley Nieto's merging of traditional tapas with some of the more ridiculed aspects of the molecular gastronomy movement like foams. When we walked into Eivissa, the Wells Street Art Festival was booming outside, the bar was four-deep with revelers and the giant front windows were opened onto the patio. The new Old Town tapas joint couldn’t have picked a better time to open, but we were more concerned with the food than the scene. We sheepishly begged for a seat in the back, and the hostess led us into a cool, cozy space, with giant wooden beams covering the ceiling. It evokes the feeling of a much older restaurant, the kind of hidden space that diners long to curl up in with a drink. more ›

Openings: Eivissa

Opening tonight in Old Town is Eivissa (1531 N. Wells, 312-654-9500), a pinxtos and tapas bar from chef Dudley Nieto. Nieto is best known for his stints at Adobo Grill, Xel-Ha and Zapatista but the number of kitchens he's logged time at rival Geno Bahena for sheer wanderlust. more ›
