Speaking from experience, pet owners can often go overboard in treating their pets as "a part of the family." Just the other night we treated Emmy to some slices of duck salami and Fleur de Maquis cheese from Pastoral's new Loop location. We've also been known to bake our own dog biscuits. Which makes a story we read in today's Sun-Times warm us even more. Ted Lownik, a part-time Barraco's pizza deliveryman, has been delivering...
Although we aren't as vocal about it as when we were new to Chicagoist, we still love living in Bridgeport and still consider not moving down here sooner one of our greatest regrets as an adult. An increasing number of artists are starting to call Bridgeport their home base, lured by plentiful space, affordable rents and a welcoming community of artists who have been living down here for years. As part of Chicago Artists Month,...
In case some of you may have forgotten, that's Emmy in the picture. Depending on the time of day she's the smartest mammal in our household. She's unusually happy today, because yesterday the City Council inched closer to allowing her the right to join us for meals at outdoor cafés, a notion that flies in the face of common sense, sanitary concerns, arguments posited by a former alderman and the director of food protection for...
A few of us have some pretty refined tastes here at Chicagoist. Among things we've probably overpaid for are dinners, movie screenings, concerts, sporting events, and computer equipment. But $600 for a makeup job? We don't even think the girliest girl on the staff would spend that much. Yet that's what Governor Blagojevich did as recently as March, when he went to Crystal Lake-based makeup artist Deborah Lee for a touch-up prior to giving his...
A couple of years ago, Alderman Gene Schulter of the 47th ward (and Chairman of the License Committee) was made aware of some scummy kennel operators in his area and was disgusted by what he found going on at their operations (e.g., dogs without food and water). He headed up a task force of sorts to ensure that kennels, grooming and other dog day care facilities would be held to some sort of standard in...
We came home from work Friday night with a simple plan: order in from Phil's Pizza, crack open a beer, and veg out watching some DVDs while the dog curled in front of the fireplace. And the plan was unfolding effortlessly. Phil's had the pizza delivered in under an hour, the fireplace was roaring so strong Emmy wasn't begging for pizza, Val Lewton's "Cat People" was queued in the DVD player.
Oprah urges each and every one of her viewers to “live your best life.” And whether she’s making like an angel or giving out free cars, she often helps to facilitate that in any way she can. But we’re pretty sure she’s not happy about people using her Oprahness to scam people out of money via e-mail phishing schemes. Illinois’ own angel Attorney General Lisa Madigan says not to fall for it. In other less...
The Emmys were last night, and if you cared, you watched. So the three of you that did can skip this post and move down the page to see what the other -ISTs wrote about last week. As for the rest of you who were catching up on episodes of "Degrassi: The Next Generation" during the big ol’ marathon this weekend, you can check out the Mo Ryan’s wrap-up here, complete with all the good...
As we reported here a few weeks ago, Tony Danza in town for three days broadcasting his crappy talk show live.
The queen of daytime talk TV signed a contract extension that'll keep her on the air through 2011. The extension of Oprah's contract will ensure that "The Oprah Winfrey Show" will be on the air for a full 25 seasons. Take that, everyone who was speculating that she'd be quitting the show soon! Oprah will also be increasing the number of original shows per season from 130 to 140. Oprah said, "The thought of taking...
I, Robot is set in a futuristic Chicago
Emmy nominations came out today, and if only to prove how much TV we can watch, were going to weigh in on just about everything. Well do this again right before and probably right after the Emmys, too. So stay tuned. Unfortunately, one of our favorite shows wasn't eligible this time around, so we'll take a second to think fondly of "Six Feet Under. "Our favorites are in bold. Drama Series: "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,"...
Floyd Kalber, a legend in Chicago broadcasting, died of emphysema Thurday at the age of 79. Kalber's career included highly rated programs on two Chicago stations and the "Today" show. At the height of his popularity in the 60's, Kalber commanded higher audience shares than anyone else on the air before or since. He received the nickname "The Big Tuna" of television news because his power in the newsroom was perceived to be as great as the power of the late Chicago mob boss Tony "Big Tuna" Acardo. Kalber was the winner of five Emmy Awards and was inducted into the Chicago Journalism Hall of Fame and the Silver Circle of the Chicago Television Academy. NBC 5 remembers Kalber in images and in video.
