Noxious Fumes At Blue Island School Send 32 To Hospitals

Toxic fumes at Paul Revere Intermediate School in Blue Island on Thursday sent 32 people to the hospital--including 22 students and Principal Carl S. Gmazel--after two janitors used bleach and drain cleaner to unclog a drain. When used together, both products created fumes that had a bad odor and made students have trouble breathing. The school was evacuated and as of Friday, everyone except for one of the custodians has been released from the hospital, officials said via the Chicago Sun-Times. more ›

50 People Displaced After Apartment Fire On North Side

About 50 residents of a horseshoe-shaped apartment complex located at 4400-4412 N. Ashland Ave. have been displaced following an extra-alarm fire on Friday night. No residents were injured in the fire, but two firefighters suffered minor injuries, said Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford. The fire was reported at about 6 p.m. and began in or near a first floor unit on the northwest corner of the building and spread upwards. more ›

The air is beginning to clear again after 150 University of Chicago students were evacuated from their dormitory after high levels of carbon monoxide, about 400 parts per million, were detected in the basement earlier this afternoon. more ›

Police Halt, Search Metra Train

Metra BNSF Line trains have been halted this morning as police search the No. 1252 express. The train was stopped at the Lisle station at 8 a.m. and has been at a stand-still since as police have evacuated and searched passengers. A source told the Tribune that one passenger called police from a cellphone after overhearing another passenger mention he had a gun on him. more ›

The 5th floor of the Cook County Building, located at 118 N. Clark St, was evacuated this afternoon and employees of two Cook County commissioners were quarantined. The Trib is reporting this all stemmed from a threatening letter. more ›

Storm Forces Hospital Evacuation

Last night's powerful storms knocked out power across the area and forced the evacuation of 11 patients from Centegra Specialty Hospital in Woodstock, which houses "skilled-nursing, hospice and behaviorial-health patients." High winds downed power lines in the northwest suburb and the patients were evacuated to two nearby hospitals: Centegra Hospital and Centegra Hospital, McHenry campus. Power was restored to Centegra Specialty Hospital two hours later. There were no injuries reported and the patients will return to the hospital later today. more ›
