Cannes loves Apichatpong Weerasethakul. His first feature, 2002's Blissfully Yours, snagged the Un Certain Regard trophy, which recognizes young talent and innovation. Two years later his second film, Tropical Malady, became the first Thai film in competition at the festival and emerged with a special Jury Prize. Finally, his mesmerizing Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives won last year's Palme d'Or. All he needs is the Grand Prix to hit for the cycle at the world's most prestigious film festival and put the cherry on top of a mountain of critical accolades, but the Eurpoean cognoscenti aren't the only ones who love Weerasethakul. There's more than enough for him here in Chicago, where he is known simply as "Joe."

Do This: The Nightingale's Musical Birthday Weekend
The focus may be on music rather than cinema for the Nightingale's observance of their third birthday this weekend, but with such a great variety of film and video-related events already under the belt of the Noble Square screening room, we think they've earned the right to have whatever kind of party they want. What they want, is apparently to rock. On Saturday night, Giant System, the music video production team that has been turning out some stunning videos for the past year, will be screening their videos of local Chicago musical acts. After a short break, Joan of Arc will perform a set as Giant System records the whole thing for their next work.
Thursday Night Chill Pick: ALDRIC
Thursday nights in Chicago can range from an all night rager to a brief stop at your favorite spot for some patio drinks and conversation. If you desire something that is more of a happy medium, and are one of the few that still regard it as a school night, then our Chill Pick is for definitely for you.
Chicagoist's "Beer of the Week": Collaborative Evil
2008 has been a banner year for Flossmoor Station Brewing Company. The rollout of their bottled beer line was well-received, with beer lovers snatching up the Pullman Brown, IPA and Station Master Wheat Ale as quickly as the brewery can bottle them. This week's selection is a joint effort between Flossmoor Station brewmaster Mat Van Wyk and two other gifted/twisted brewmasters.
