Oprah turns 58, a Pilsen man has been charged with a weekend rape, and other news.
Extra Extra: Happy Birthday, Oprah!
Extra, Extra
Kanye West's mother Donda West's autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday. The Chicago Board of Education is going to approve plans for a culinary arts high school for juniors about to drop out of school. Mark your calendars: On weekends between November 17 and December 23, Fannie May will be offering free ferry rides "between Chicago's commuter train stations and the Michigan Avenue shopping district." Moo Moo, a 2-year-old shih tzu was stolen from his Wicker...
Who Knew? It's National Candy Month!
Chicagoist recently learned that June is National Candy Month. While this sounds a lot like a Hallmark-invented celebration, who doesn't want an excuse to eat lots of candy? It turns out Chicago is a major hub in the candy industry. Between Fannie May, Ferrara Pan, M&M Mars, Affy Tapple, Jelly Belly, World's Finest Chocolate and now Frango returning to Chicago, it's almost shocking that the American Dental Association hasn't singled out our city as a hub for terrorist tooth attacks.
Sweet: Redford Moving In on Fannie May
It's now (sort of) official: Robert Redford's Sundance Cinemas has signed a lease to open an eight-screen theater on the site of the former Fannie May candy factory in the West Loop. The last time we reported on this story was way back in 2005. But as anyone waiting for a Dominick's to reopen in lakeview can tell you, real estate development often moves about as quickly as a glacier. (Tangental rhetorical question: whatever happened...
Fields May Be Gone, But You Can Get Fresh with Frango
Chicagoist is not a year-round mint consumer. We'll generally take a chocolate-caramel conocotion over a peppermint patty, and opt to suck on a strawberry bon bon over a Starlight mint.
Fannie May Flagship Is Back: Bigger & Better!
Yesterday marked the return of the Fannie May flagship store on Michigan & Wacker. The store is now four times the size of the store that was there, which is awesome because that store could get totally cramped. Expecially around the holidays. The new design was done by Chicago-based Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture and is supposed to be more warm and contemporary. For the history buffs, there's now a "Heritage Wall" that shows Fannie May's Chicago roots, dating back to 1920, and has a collage of vintage photographs.
Candy Sales, Up. Chocolate Altoids, Meh.
Halloween is more than just an excuse to slut it up; it’s also one of the most important holidays to candy makers. And it seems that sales – especially for Chicago-based confectioners – are up. Crains reported Chicago’s own Tootsie Roll Industries grew its third-quarter earnings, and shares rose 7 percent in October. Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co. also posted increases, with shares up 14 percent last month. And, Fannie May, now owned by 1-800-Flowers, is...
Think Pink, Eat Chocolate
It doesn’t take much arm-twisting to get us to dive into a box of chocolates, so when there’s an added bonus of a good cause, consider us on board. In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Fannie May will be supporting the PINK Campaign to raise money for local cancer centers. Maggie Daley is serving as the honorary chair.
Will Lefors Cinemas Be Hot on Its Trail?
Crain’s is reporting that Robert Redford’s year-old Sundance Cinemas chain plans to anchor a shopping center at Jackson and Racine, the former site of a Fannie May candy factory. The Sundance Cinemas theater would not only give Chicagoans an additional venue for art house films but would also bring some economic development to the West Side. A “specialty grocery store” is planned for the site as well as a health club. And we’re willing to...
Canady Le Chocolatier
People in this city can be passionate about their chocolates. Between Fannie May, Brach's, Frango, and Margie's everyone has his or her favorite and any dissenting opinions are just not recognized as valid alternatives. We were raised in a Brach's household and to this day the sight of candy corn hurts our teeth to no end.
What Would Willy Wonka Do?
Perhaps they should have thought twice before handing out all of that free candy.
Free Pixies!
If you work in The Loop or on Michigan Ave., you have to find some excuse to head down to the Fannie May store opening on Michigan/Wacker today at 10 a.m. The first 500 customers get a FREE one-pound box of Pixies!
Fannie May Stores Reopening
8 months ago Fannie May was shut down after 84 years in business when their parent company, Archibald Candy, went bankrupt. But never fear: Alpine Confections, based in Utah, bought the Fannie May and Fanny Farmer brands in federal bankruptcy court last April for a mere $38.9 million. Under new ownership, Chicago-based Fannie May candy stores are reopening for business.
