Sub Pop has put up a nice little sampler available as a free download. While a lot of the tracks were already available for free through Amazon, this is the first time they've been bundled up all together and man, it makes a good argument that the label has regained its footing and sharpened its focus after its nearly disastrous post-Nirvana expansion.
Last night's Flight Of The Conchords show at the Arie Crown was long, loose, and utterly hilarious. Early reports from the road had us worrying that we'd get far too short a set, but at the end of nearly two hours the Kiwi duo had mined material from all stages of their career and left the audience in stitches. The group obviously went past the set list to dig deep and impulsively unearth some unexpected gems like ""Hip-Hopopotamus vs. The Rhymenoceros," but our personal highlights included "Hurt Feelings, "Epileptic Dogs," the audience participation (and by participation we mean near molestation) of "Sugalumps," and an epic version of "Bowie." Of the new material we thought the Western song-story and metaphysical tomfoolery of "Stana" was the strongest ... but honestly, even at the show's wobbliest moments we we always entertained.
You either love 'em or hate 'em. We love 'em. And some of the best songs by Flight of the Conchords have been their hip-hop styled songs. Including this one.
Last week, we mentioned Flight of the Conchords' upcoming show at the Arie Crown. It now seems demand was so high for New Zealand's "fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo" that they've added an additional date for April 29. Presale tickets are available now and general onsale begins this Saturday. [via]
Getcher pre-sale on! Flight Of The Conchords will bring their New Zealandic and comedic musical stylings to the Arie Crown on April 28. We would have preferred to see them playing the Shedd, but Arie Crown will have to do. Snag tickets via pre-sale starting Monday, and the password is ... SUGALUMPS!
Ah, Flight of the Conchords. You either love them or don't get them. We, for one, love them and we're happy to see that website Funny Or Die has the second season premiere available before the show officially returns to HBO next month for its second and final season.
We dig Aziz Ansari, comedian, actor, and member of comedy troupe Human Giant. And we're not the only ones: Ansari has been tapped to star alongside Rashida Jones and Amy Poehler in a spin-off of The Office that actually isn't a spin-off of The Office. He recently gave a few more details to the Trib, but we're going to be watching it regardless. And if you want to catch Aziz's great stand-up set in person, you're in luck as he's making a stop at the Lakeshore Theater tonight on his Glow in the Dark Tour. There are still a few tickets available for $20 and given how awesome Aziz's performances with Human Giant are, you're not going to want to miss it. But don't just take our word for it: he's got a part in Judd Apatow's upcoming film Funny People. And to prime yourself for his set tonight, tune your radio to 88.3 WZRD as Aziz takes over from 1:30 to 2:30 this afternoon.
O.K., it's not Chicago related, but we know the New Zealand duo Flight of the Conchords have lots of Chicago fans, right? Well, we're sad to say that their next season will also be their last. While we're pleased to see that they're going out on a high note before the series has a chance to devolve, we're upset we'll only have one more season to see that hair helmet or see someone get hit in the face with a sandwich.
